Great idea; while they're working nobody thinks a lot about it, but in ten years time people will look at this excellent collection of photos and be able to marvel at how it was in the "good old days."

G'day all.
I have been reliably informed that as of this coming Monday night, Broadford will be abolished as a signalled location. I'm not sure if is to do with ARTC's coming upgrades, but nonetheless it will be happening.
So I went for a wonder across there to take some happy snaps with my phone camera. (Apologies in advance!)
Cheers all.

Yes all semaphores and interlocking to be removed at Broadford .

North C works by Victrack suspended by Victrack pending Enquiry as to why Boom Barriers at Thompsons Rd level crossing recently failed to operate for the down Overland . Then North C will bite the dust .

Mechanical interlocking at South Geelong soldiers on with mix of 2 & 3 position colour light signals . But its days too are numbered with pending duplication South Geelong to Waurn Ponds .  Guess that leaves Wallan as the last man standing on the VLP passenger network .

Is there any connection between the post number of a semaphore signal in Victoria, and the lever number in the signal box?
  duttonbay Minister for Railways

Is there any connection between the post number of a semaphore signal in Victoria, and the lever number in the signal box?
awsgc24
No. The post numbers are allocated based on distance from Melbourne. The lever numbers tend to be grouped to minimize walking by the signalman, so that the down distant, home and starting signal might be levers 1, 2 and 3.

Thank you for the photos damooops,, sounds like we're approaching  the end of an era.
Am curious, what is the rationale for removing the signaling here?

I'm puzzled about this too and haven't seen an explanation anywhere.

There's a discussion here trying to extract meaning from a government press release about the Shepp line work, in which we concluded that Kilmore East might be abolished. So that was probably wrong. Is some sort of remote control from Craigieburn to Seymour, controlled from Kilmore East, on the cards perhaps? And abolishing Broadford makes that cheaper/easier?

I'm probably wrong but I'd love to hear an answer from someone who understands these things more thoroughly.

A great collection of photos damoops, thanks very much for sharing them.  Interesting to know why these semaphores have survived for so long?   Are there any other V/Line stations with a similar set of semaphores?

What will become of the ones removed from Broadford?  Would they be useful or offered to heritage railway groups?  In some locations they have found their way into some kind of static display nearby.  It would be sad to see them just thrown on the scrap heap.

Thanks for sharing those photographs and a guess it is the end of a really long era on the north east line.

Signal numbers based on mileage from Melbourne are for Automatic signals, which are not semaphores controlled from a signal box.

There must be another explanation.

I shall try again - I was unclear previously.

Signal post numbers start at 1 for the signal closest to Melbourne, and then increment by 1 for each signal post reached throughout the interlocking. Here's the 1961 diagram for Broadford which illustrates the post numbering. On these diagrams the post number is inside the circle at the "foot" of the signal.

https://www.victorianrailways.net/signaling/completedia/bford1961.html

This one is the box diagram, which shows both the post numbers and the signalbox levers. Note the box diagram is oriented opposite to signal diagram, which always (?) has Melbourne to the left, but the box diagram is aligned with the position of the frame and signal box.

Unhelpfully neither refuge loop or refuge siding mention how long they are.

What happens if an extra signal is installed in between existing signal posts numbered without gaps.

There is some conflicting information about coming changes to signals at Broadford signals:

* another thread says that all signals are to be abolished, probably including points and signal box.

* NSW Railway Digest says that signals at Broadford are to be converted to colour lights, probably including installation of track circuits.

Which is it?

All signals etc have already been abolished and removed. Broadford is now nothing more than a platform in the Kilmore East to Seymour section. There has been talk for a while of what will replace the double line block system, ranging from electronic train orders to track block and everything in between depending on the day and who you speak to, only time will tell when it finally happens.

With V Line, a bloke walking in front with a red flag would be considered progressive.

Be interesting if they are offered to preservation groups as I believe one of the arms was stolen as the works crews removed them for later collection.
Yet another case of gunzels thinking  there untouchable and its there right to take it does no good for the heritage movement.
