They were probably thinking "That's what 3801 appeared in when first built." Battleship Grey was the livery thanks to wartime austerity.

3801's first nickname was "The Grey Nurse" (like the shark).

The paint used on them was RAN Ship Grey, they weren't let loose in undercoat only.  Perhaps undercoat for their first trials.
