Buses to replace long-distance Amtrak trains under Trump budget proposal

News article: Buses to replace long-distance Amtrak trains under Trump budget proposal

The initial budget proposal for the 2020 financial year issued by President Donald Trump on March 11 would see federal funding for Amtrak long-distance trains eliminated.

I only hope is the Trump proposal dies through the Democrats blocking the proposal, though the new Amtrak CEO is apparently no fan of Amtrak long distance services either.

My plan to travel to US next year would entail, Los Angeles to Emeryville on the Coast Starlight, then Emeryville/Sacramento/Denver on the California Zephyr to Cheyenne to see and maybe travel behind the Big Boy loco at Cheyenne.

However I'm not travelling over 2000 miles in buses.. Sad

It does seem odd Mike as the longer distance services would NOT go well as a bus service.  I really hope this does not get up.

I doubt that you could rent a Green Mini Cooper there either.

Trump announced several months ago that long distance Amtrak services would be cut.  Let's hope that the US travelling public (sorry, traveling) will vociferously object, and that a new Administration in 2020 will reverse any changes.

Relax guys, this has no hope of getting up.

Cutting the long distance services gets proposed by the government every time they prepare a budget under any president. They haemorrhage money so badly that it would be irresponsible to not consider options.

And what happens every single time is that it doesn't happen, because it gets exchanged for other favours and bargaining chips by rural Representatives (of both parties, not a bloc vote) to ensure it doesn't happen.

If you don't believe me, look up the same threads we had on the subject last time it came up!

No one will and I think that's the whole idea.

Close the train replace with bus no one uses, so close the bus. Look at all the money saved!

I have travelled in a bus in the USA , , from San Jose to LA.  It was the most disorganised, third rate travel experience I have ever had.

With the US government budget deficit getting worse and worse Amtrak is unfortunately looking very shakey.

Great Southern Rail might get some bargain rolling stock suitable for upgrades to Australian standards.

Rent a car ......... I usually get whatever the Highway Patrol use.  I've owned a car and motorcycle in the USA also , insurance can be a pain but it is dirt cheap for extended holidays.

I may as well fly domestically instead of hiring a car which is no holiday if I have to concentrate on the roads, albeit I know they are freeways all the way to Cheyenne. Moreover, I'm a PT supporter, again another legit reason not to drive all that distance.

I am well familiar with train travel between Emeryville and Denver as I've travelled that way several times over the years.

Thanks for the tip, much appreciated.  I have everything else (I think) set to use Australian English, including Windows itself, but I found that there is a separate language selection within Firefox.  FF apparently defaults to English (US) and does not include Aussie English, but does include English (UK), which is close enough and gets rid of the squiggly red lines under words like "colour", "centre" etc. in RP - even "travelling".
