Excellent summary James, well done.

Interesting to see Ballarat intermodal get a run, and REALLY interesting to see Murray Basin money unspent...

Also note the following from the Minster

$475m for the Monash rail link and this about the Ballarat Intermodal Freight Terminal.  An additional $9m has been allocated for the connection to the network one would assume?

  • Provide core infrastructure to enable the operation of a freight facility capable of handling High Productivity Freight Vehicles, within the planned Ballarat West Employment Zone.

Also of note for Victoria is:

Port Rail Shuttle
  • Deliver a series of rail freight shuttles to move large shipping containers between the Port of Melbourne and freight rail terminals located around the city.

Interestingly according to the document $38m has already been allocated with another $14m in this budget.  For another thread but where has the money been spent?

Is it just my bias, or does the term Business Case seem to appear with great frequency in relation to rail investment, while the philosophy behind road spending is “just get on with it”?

I heard Josh state there was $1.5b in the budget for port and freight interface anyone found this in the document?

The two SA projects mentioned are re-announcements of existing funding.

Oaklands Crossing is well on the way to completion with the switch to the new underpass to take place in a couple of weeks, and works for the Gawler electrification are underway.

$100m for a port road seems stupid with rail access available.  There is barely any funding for rail projects in QLD.

Gladstone Port Access Road Extension*
  • Extend the Gladstone Port Access Road to improve access to the Port for heavy vehicles and improve safety for all road users.

unfortunately this road upgrade will really spoil the area for sure.  Drove this road in January and enjoyed off roading.  What a waste of money.

The people who live out that way will disagree. The unsealed road is often impassable in the wet season.

Was the electrification to Gawler previously announced as this was not funded previously?

SA announcements are mostly roads as usual not a penny fpr the Eyre rail network to keep trucks off the road.

As for the Vic situation they have done very well put nothing for freight our of Portland and for intermodal at Portland North.

Yes. Announced and funded previously, and works underway.

Do try to keep up.

This is a re-announcement of funding made in a previous budget.

In addition to the 600m of elevated extension beyond the end of the current line, another 400m or so of the current line needs to be rebuilt to provide the approach ramp to the elevated line.

This project is on hold after the state planning commission rejected the detailed design for being non-compliant with disability discrimination legislation and numerous building standards. The state government will need to adjust the design and submit it for assessment again.

There is some level of suspicion that this is a smokescreen for cancelling it by stealth and giving up on the project.

That has been explored in the thread in question. I shan’t repeat in detail here but two grands have been made and the rest is probably paying consultants to be public servants.

https://www.premier.vic.gov.au/morrison-fails-fair-share-test-on-victorian-infrastructure/

The claim here by the Vic gov that they are spending $42.5b on infrastructure vs less than $5b from the feds over the forward estimates is interesting and I wouldn’t mind a complete fact check on it. It certainly stacks up at first glance given big bikkies are flowing from Treasury Place over the next 4 years for Metro Tunnel, West Gate Tunnel, North East Link and so on - all state funded - whereas federal commitments to MARL etc have been pushed beyond the Budget papers or are relatively small like the Regional Rail Revival grants.

It’s an absolutely ridiculous situation given the relative revenues of state and federal governments. The state is plainly operating near the edges of its capital-raising capabilities, and I would not be surprised if the federal Liberals’ intention is to try and cause a budget crunch in Victoria so they can ride in as white knights.

I don’t expect this to change much with a federal Labor government - their Victorian infrastructure pledges have been rather subdued. The only thing that will change is that Andrews will kick up less of a fuss about it.

The local mechanical repair places along that "road" would not be happy with an upgrade either.  They have a nice little earner from the multitude of shredded tyres, broken axles, damaged windscreens and various other mechanical problems which come their way, largely caused by excessive speed, over-inflated tyres, inexperienced drivers not driving to the often demanding conditions.

Bevans,
As an ex-Gladstone resident I can assure you the Original Port Access Road was money well spent and the extension is likely also money well spent. No everything can go via rail and hence you need a decent road to access the port. The previous road is now a family playground, water park and picnic area on the foreshore. ie no longer using the best spot of Gladstone city as a transport corridor.

As for funding of Qld rail projects. I suspect alot of this gets down to how hard the Qld govt appeals for funding and as we have seen in the past, even Fed ALP govts don't throw money at ALP run states where there is an incompetent state govt. Qld's biggest funding needs right now are the CRR (underway) and the NCL duplication and realignment. The other big project is the Inland which was funded.
