The damage is bad, but perhaps not as devastating as first thought. I'll leave this right here:My wife and I were in Paris early November 2018 and viewed the exterior of Notre Dame but due to the large crowds decided to leave it to next time to go inside. Now its too late and the moral is don't miss an opportunity when it arises. But who would have thought such a terrible thing would happen to such an iconic building. My thoughts go out to all Parisians. Worlds most beautiful city.
Donald was unaffected, just suggested that they should have used Water Bombers. Oh yeah, the force of the drop would have demolished the place, not to mention the 'collateral damage' if they missed the target.Fortunately, the frog firemen didn't take any notice. Really remarkable that there appears to be only little damage to the stone work and is reasonably intact in that respect and did not collapse entirely. Based on pictures and this may vary, upon better examination.
The French President has insisted that they will indeed rebuild it, and they will be setting up a fund to do so, quite a lot of the priceless artifacts were saved by quick thinking people, but there were some that were lost.Lets hope that the Fund Manager doesn't skim off their usual 'fee' as they would in Australia.
My sentiments entirely. I've been to Paris a couple of times and on both occasions decided to give the internal tour a miss because of the large queues and settled for a coffee in a nearby café instead. If I ever I get to go there again, once the cathedral is restored, then I won't make the same mistake. The damage is bad, but perhaps not as devastating as first thought. If Notre Dame Cathedral were in NSW (at say the SCG or old Showgrounds), the State Liberals would have knocked it down already because it dosn't meet modern safety standards. This event proves them right. /sWithout wanting to trivialize this terrible catastrophe, there's an element of truth in that djf01. Heritage is an anathema in the current Liberal doctrine. The only thing they understand is economic rationalism. The party has no soul, which is why I no longer vote for it.
The restoration team is under investigation now according to some news sites. These structures are under permanent maintenance, you cannot just leave them. The building has previously undergone major restoration over the last 200 years, the Spire that collapses is only 150 years or so old as it was previously dismantled for repair from wind damage.
I think it should have been left alone... It might have been standing for another 800 years...
Now there is even more restoration needed....
Now there is talk about Australia donating money for the restoration of the church. Why?Exactly! I'm sure the Catholic church has several million hidden somewhere they can use to fix their building.
Have not yet seen the Vatican make announcements regarding funding?
