Sydney Trains S Set - Scrapping has recommenced :(

  C3765 Train Controller

As of yesterday (15/04/19), run 14 has now become a K Set roster meaning there are no longer any S Sets rostered to run the T3 Bankstown Line.

There are currently only 3 S Set rosters (during the Easter show):

17(8S) -MP only, 23(4S) and 24(4S).

L1 and L2 are currently rostered as A Sets due to the Easter show and may revert back to an S Set, however they may make this change permanent as the S Sets aren’t going to be timetabled from the 28th of April anyway.

Today there were 3 8-Car S Sets in service from what I know.

Run 17 (S113/S100)

Run 21 (S64/S99)

Run 38 (S145/S140)

There were no S Sets today on the Carlingford Line. Both runs 23 and 24 were both K Sets, and of course the Olympic Park shuttles were A Sets.

There were about a dozen S Sets stabled at FMC today. I was able to spot S28 at the back with 3 other 8- Car S Sets and a few more at the front including S69/S67.

Hi, has there been any developments lately?

Two (2) 4car S sets have had a reprieve in the New Timetable.

Weekdays, from Monday, April 29, the Sprint will continue to be Timetabled for 4S set consist (Rosters L1 and L2), up until Friday, September 6.
The exception to this will be when Special Events are held at Olympic Park requiring build-ups and altered consist.

That's weird. I thought there were enough B sets after the new timetable to cover for all s set rosters. any reason why L1 and L2 are 4S until Sept.6? Also, Carlingford runs are back to S sets again.
  scott4570 Chief Train Controller

The reason for continued use of 2 x 4S sets is that one (1) 8T set has been taken out of the Timetable on Sector 3 (T1 & T9 services) due to the acceleration of the Tangara Upgrade Program.

As a result, a 8A Waratah set has been transferred from Sector 2 (T2, T3, T8 services) to Sector 3 (T1 & T9 services).
To replace the 8A set on Sector 2, 2 x 4K sets that would have worked the Sprint service have gone back in to work as a 8K set.

Oh well. good to hear the upgrade program is moving along. What are they adding to the Tangara fleet?

How many S sets operating today outside of the shuttles?

Is there going to be word on when the last S-set runs the Carlingford line? and the other lines, etc.
Like a time or something?

This Upgrade Program is to ensure the Tangara continues beyond 2030. Includes Automatic Train Protection, Passenger features (e.g. CCTV, Destination Displays, Audible PA system).

As long as they add DVA, PID and a speaker system which isn't only audible with the door tones, I'll happily take a Tangara again without having Tripview open!

That is what tripview says. weekends are Mills. Monday onwards, runs 23 and 24 are K sets. The last S sets will be on the Olympic Park shuttle until September 30 2019.

Nothing that Tripview tells me. we'll have 2 4-car sets until 30 Sept doing regular runs, so here is the chance for photos!

Looks like S sets are here to stay for quite a while, spotted 4 8S sets operating in the evening peak today(not sure of consists though):
Run 10(Scheduled 8M)
Run 16(Scheduled 8K)
Run 29(Scheduled 8C)
Run 35(Scheduled 8K)

Also spotted 8K on the Olympic Shuttle(scheduled 8S) which may be the reason for the high amount of S sets operating elsewhere.

I have been told that S28, S67, S69 and S104 have officially retired and will head of to the chop block in Chullora next week.

That is because TripView only tells you the timetable for the next 7 days and S Sets aren’t needed until acceleration of the Tangara Technology Upgrade starts, so for a while it will probably be rostered as K Sets.

Are you sure S67 and S104 were withdrawn, because S67 and S104 received the heritage cars. If S28, S67, S69 and S104 have really been withdrawn they will have to move C3021, C3912, C3765 and T4101. I guess they could form a new 4-Car Set with those cars.

I would say the heritage cars may separate from their sets and somehow in the future I don't know whether they will form a new 4 car set. Will have to get more info when it comes along. I only found out from a railway source on fb.
  C3765 Train Controller

It is possible that they temporarily placed the significant carriages in sets (e.g. S2, S56, S104) to keep them in service until they weren’t needed as much so that they could eventually break up existing sets and create new sets using only significant carriages.

The significant cars in the 4 Sets S100S28 heard were withdrawn are enough to make up a new 4-Car Set except it would be a unusual consist with a power car in the middle.

C3765-Last Comeng Built Power Car

T4101-First Goninan Built Trailer Car

C3912-First of Mk3 Comeng Power Cars

C3022-First of Mk2 Goninan Power Cars

I’m not sure if C3748, one of two Mk4(C3741-C3765) Comeng Power cars left in existence will be kept.

These cars may be moved to another set, form a new set or could just be stored at the back of FMC or with the rest of the preserved fleet.

S64/S99 ran both runs 17 and 29 today. S64/S99 ran run 17 this morning while a C Set ran run 29. Some issue occurred with the C Set so when it returned to Auburn after the morning peak, at 11:12am S64/S99 were transferred from FMC to AMF to complete the rest of the run for the evening peak.

S123 is stored at the very back of FMC with the ATP Test Train Y Sets. S67/S69 were at the front of FMC and S28 is still at the back where it has been for weeks now.
  C3765 Train Controller

Just read that S123 has been withdrawn from service. It is still functional though as it was still powered up today.
