Sydney Trains S Set - Scrapping has recommenced :(

TripView was updated this morning and now the T6 Line and T7 Line services have been reverted back to 4-Car S Sets. On Thursday the Olympic Park Line is timetabled as an 8 Car S Set and an 8 Car A Set.
Yesterday (26/04/19) was only the last day of timetabled S Sets on the main line.

There are only 13 S Sets left: S2, S56, S61, S64, S65, S97, S99, S100, S103, S113, S135, S140 and S145.

Recently Withdrawn sets are: S28, S67, S69, S104 and S123 (All containing heritage cars except S69)

S103 may be next as it does not have a proper target plate like S67 because they know it won’t be around for long. S100 might still remain for a while as it got brand new target plates about a month ago.

If they are to take the heritage carriages from the withdrawn sets and create new sets, possible sets could be:

S101 - C3765-T4926-T4002-C3912
S102 - C3021-T4101-T4018-C3748

They may number these after S100 (S100-S105(If 6-4 Car Sets)/S111(If 6-8Car Sets)because they would already have the target plates for most of them.

If Howard let the London rail enthusiasts do it for the 67 stock, then certainly he'll let us for the S set as well.

Just rode S140 on an Olympic Park run. The other set running was K76.

Interesting, as it gets closer to the end, it paints a clearer picture which of those will probably survive. Looks like S28, S56 and S123 will be the front runners, with C3001 off S64 to survive.

A good re-arrangement would be to take C3001 off S64 and couple it together with T4101 on S28 and perhaps make a new consist such as C3001-T4101-T(D)4002-C3765. It should be noted that C3001 and T4101 were the first 2 Goninan cars delivered and lead the first official train for the opening of the ESR Line to Bondi Junction on 23 June 1979, so the 40 year milestone will be coming up pretty soon and this set could be run to mark the occasion (if one is celebrated).

C3912 could then be shifted onto S123 to be with C3986 and you will have the first and last Mk3 Comeng power cars together. S56 has both a comeng Mk 1 and Mk 2 non driving trailer (4961 and 4968) and the 2 oldest comeng power cars in service. Any of these final 3 4-car sets could then be amalgamated into an 8-car set as a Farewell to the S sets event over a weekend when the last of the B sets enter service.

Maybe someone can enlighten me a bit more about T4050?

I think when the new Sydney Rail Map is rolled out on the S Sets, we will be able to tell which sets will be keeping S28, S56 and S123 company.

Possibly S100 because as I mentioned before it received new target plates but there is only 1 significant car in the Set so I’m not too sure.

S28 could already have the new maps as it has been at Flemington for some time.

I’m certain there will still be a lot of shuffling of cars to come.

Possible new consists:

S64: C3001-T4003 (exS135)-T4018 (exS104)-C3935
S100: C3016-T4922 (ExS103)-T4013-C3891

Interestingly, according to Scott 4018 and 3748 were not sighted at the scrap yard and no scrap metal could be found. 4018 and 3748 could have possible been retained and temporarily out of service as there are not enough cars to make a set at this point, unless they take two cars off an existing set. C3912 was out of service for a while before being put in S67 so it is possible.

Have any carriages been sold to private buyers or have all non-significant cars been scrapped?

There are still 14 S Sets still in service, you would’ve known if you had Scott’s previous posts. The 14 S Sets have many non-significant cars in them and so far none have been sold.

C3840 and T4058 should stay at Petersham Training College until the K Sets and C Sets start retirement. The reason is drivers are trained to drive the newer modern trains using simulations but use the S Set Cars to be trained to drive the Ks, Cs and Vs.

Although C3840 is a Series 1 Motor Car it had series 2 seating when moved to Petersham. The series 2 seats from both C3840 and T4058 were then moved to K Set cars C3580 and another car which for some reason had Series 1 S Set seating so currently the 2 carriages do not have any seats. The drivers compartment is still fully intact with all the controls and switches still there. I don’t think the 2 carriages will be scrapped.

C3840 just needs an external clean and series 1 seats from C3814 could be moved to C3840 to complete the car. C3840 is one of only 3 Series 1 power cars left, it also has the Cityrail logo and it is the only carriage left in existence that has headlights above its destination board.

Why would they put new Sydney Train network maps on the S sets that are retained and used for emergency purposes. They only will be around till the 2nd batch of B sets come online.

S100S28
They are going to be in service for another 3-4 months, they wouldn’t leave the S Sets with old maps as it would cause confusion among passengers. The 2nd Batch of B Sets aren’t going to arrive for a while, they’ll probably enter service next year. The S Sets are said to be staying until at least September but they may keep running for longer since the first Tangara to receive the upgrade is still testing. There are 447 carriages to be upgraded in roughly 111 Sets, if 4 Tangaras are upgraded each week it would still take 27 weeks till the upgrade is completed on all sets. It would probably take 2-3 weeks per 4 Tangara sets so that would be 54 weeks! More than a year! But by then the 2nd batch of B Sets would’ve arrived.

Regarding the private sale of the carriages, I have been told they’ve all been sold to the scrappers already apart from the few earmarked for preservation.

Any more news on the final run?

^ I heard that a report about which cars contain asbestos was lost, so all sets are being scrapped in case any have asbestos inside.
  C3765 Junior Train Controller

If anyone really want to purchase a S Set carriage, you could try contacting the scrappers and offer to pay a higher price than they originally bought the cars. Until now, I thought they might sell carriages from the retained 6 sets but probably not. You may be able to purchase a K Set, V Set or C Set carriage later on.

Without an asbestos survey, they may consider the potential liabilities too high.
Sydney Trains/TfNSW may also have a non-resale condition on the sale to the scrappers - so that any possible liabilities for asbestos cannot be bounced to them down the line.

Judges just love assigning costs/compensation to government entities as they will pay up - they don't have the option of declaring bankruptcy and disappearing Smile
So TfNSW will be rightly worried about someone buying a carriage off the scrapies, being 'injured' by not disclosed toxic substances and then find themselves liable for compensation despite them not actually being the vendor for the sale.
  C3765 Junior Train Controller

If you agreed to pay for an asbestos check and if necessary, removal of the asbestos maybe they will agree to sell it.

So far it seems the preserved motor cars might be (C3805, C3861?, C3912, C3986, C3765, C3001) and trailers (T4101, T4150, D4002, T4921-62 range, T4968 or T4983, T4050?). That would be about 11-12 cars. If it is a list like this then this is a good one where it covers pretty much every main contract (or sub contract). C3805 and T4150 will probably not be running for quite some time, so there's other cars that could be ready to go. In terms of set formation something like C3001-T4101-D4002-C3765 and C3912-T4921/62-T4968 or 83-C3986 would be good and this could even form an 8-car farewell set to run on a special day probably when the last 2 Waratah B sets have entered service.

I guess a fair question is where these preserved cars will be stored? With the S set scrapping going on should probably be some good space opening up at Flemington Maintenance Center for them.

Although still a fair bit off, choosing to preserve V set cars will be an interesting case, especially the camshaft ones, quite a few important/prominent cars seem to have survived that were part of first electric train celebrations, etc. When it eventually comes to K and C sets, much simpler, just a 4 car set will do.
