Locos X41 and X42, PN loco scrapping at South Dynon

Location: If it isn't obvious by now, it should be.
Schedules in the system for a transfer from North Dynon to Newport Workshops of two G's and a P Class this week (tomorrow IIRC). P being dumped at Newport and G's return light.

Whether the P's to be stripped as per T400 or saved at the last minute remains to be seen.

Oh, and the video I had on my FB page was from March last year when it was reactivated.

How long before PN gives the XRs the jaws of death? Only 4 remain in service, 2 BG, 2 SG. The other 5 are in storage.

The XRs are interesting. The first 6 (XR550 to XR555) are all rebuilds of first series X class which ultimately date back to 1966. The final 3 (XR557 - XR559) though were new builds from midway through the last decade.

Either way, they were only built or rebuilt about 15 years ago, so they should have plenty of life left in them, especially with NRs being too heavy for the Mildura line.

Interestingly, there is no XR556, does anybody know why?

From what I know, Either X31 or X36 were going to be rebuilt into XR's with one retained for preservation. The XR rebuilding Program revealed that it was cheeper to build new locos with the G Engines than to retrofit them into X Classes and thus the new builds emerged. In Short XR556 was going to be rebuilt from X31 or X36. This never eventuated due to PN wanting to Honour the Deal FA Made with SRHC giving them X36 in exchange for getting X31 at a later date in full running order. X36 was decided to be kept as a back up for this deal. There is no XR556 because of this. It was canceled due to PN ending the Rebuild program when they bought up FA.

I think you will find X31 was always destined to go to SHRC and that it was X36 that was going to be XR556 but it was found to be better value for money to retrofit the existing locos with QES1000 and gain a 50% increase in hauling capability than to fully rebuild into an XR as was done to X36.

Hellelujah! I've finally worked out how to log on after getting "Too many redirects" messages for the last month.

Anyway, Fatty posted: "A T, 2 Xs and S306 are going to preservation groups. I don't know which particualr engines though."

Are you sure about the Xs? PN has X49 in store, but X48 and X50 have both run to Mildura in the last week or so. X45, X46 and X52 were sold to Ettamogah. X47 and X51 went to SCT. Aurizon's X54 is for sale and X53 is already gone.

PS. Not sure about the new reply function here. If you insert a quote, you can only write your own response above it, not below. What was wrong with the old way?

It seems reasonable, S306 looks to have turned up in the right part of Newport from what I gather from the photos of that loco, X37 has ended up at Seymour as of a few months ago and I've heard rumour of T379 being sold or at least heading to 'someone', that just leaves the last A left of PNs fleet that's stranded up at Bendigo. It'll be interesting to see if this all turns out to be true and someone's got ahold of that thing and then the second X I imagine could be X49 being the only one stored, although it's been fairly heavily modified in the cab department so perhaps one of 48 or 50 is soon to be retired and someone's got in early. I have my money on Seymour wanting one of every series of X with what they currently have but I digress, anything can happen with the way things have been going lately

Passed the Yard today where the locos for scrapping have been historically placed and nothing sitting in death row.

Certainly wasn't questioning the info re S306. I took "Fatty" as meaning two Xs in addition to X37, as the latter had already gone to Seymour. Anyway, all will be revealed, eventually.

PS: Graham, I've just realised the old reply function is still there. I just didn't notice it because it's been a month or more since I've been able to log on!
