SSR buys more retro locos

I don't think there's an issue if the roster for a train has shytehouse loco allocation, but it sounds like someone put the 600 on point where there was a better-equipped loco in the consist. This goes against the accepted convention, whereby the most comfortable serviceable loco from a crew perspective is marshalled up the front unless there's a damn good reason for not doing so.
The decision was okayed by several people before it happened too.

I'm not having a crack at the crew for their decision to whack the 600 on the front - hell, I've put an 80 Class on the front of a wheat train before over a pair of 81's to make the Werris Creek crew's job easier when they got home. No shunting multiple locos's or anything, just close the taps, cut the 81 in, lift the pin and go.

I was just trying to point out that just because there is a loco on point that is older than the crew isn't an issue if that's all that was allocated to that service, but if you have, say, an 81/82/G/NR combination convention says the NR will go on the front unless you have a good - and justifiable - reason for something else.

GWA are still regularly running CLF’s and CLP’s in South Australia and nobody seems to mind but when another operator goes and buys the same second hand locos to do the same type of work the sky starts falling in.

Haters will hate.

The locos bought from Apex had good wheels,  considering the length of time taken to dispose of them I would guess they got the locos effectively for free once you deduct the wheelsets.

Is a loco that was built in the70's and had a midlife upgrade in the 90's really that retro in the context of what is out there?  81 class frames are only 10 years newer and have remained largely unchanged since built, should they be considered retro too?

Despite an earlier post I don't think there is any hard and fast plan at present.

What role will these play in the SSR fleet now?  Are they going to replace some of the lower hp and older locos (perhaps retiring some of these) or are there new business options emerging?

Simply the purchase was most likely a good opportunity to pick up the locos at a good price.

I doubt it will result in any other locos in the SSR fleet being retired while those older locos are still fit for purpose and do the jobs they are allocated.

It will take time and a further financial investment to get the CLP/CLF locos back into serviceable condition and it may be a longer term thing with work being performed on them when time and finances permit. Obviously a new contract in the future would speed up this process.

It will be interesting to see if the rubbish ZTR traction control systems are replaced as not only are they crap but spares are not readily available. SSRs C class, RL and BRMs all have Q-tron Qes traction control system and would make sense to update CLP/CLFs to the same much more reliable and serviceable traction control system.

Time will tell.

Someone made the comment regarding the 600 may have been better than the jumbo's, that's something that I would not have discounted after working a 600cl once at PTK, but the other side of the coin was the mods that were carried out on the 45cl at WCK which I worked as the AFULE rep to get the base changes to the cabs on them, end of the day, they were far better than many of the Jumbo's as far as ride control is concerned.

I found few jumbo's to be pleasant to work on which many called them Squeak, Rattle and Bang/Roll especially at speed.

The 81class in many ways was a huge lift in cab environment and conditions, except for the cramped seating owing to the closeness of the door openings. Cannot comment on other classes as never stepped foot on them.

I bet they stay in GWA livery. SSR is a heritage operator not only of locos but liveries....

Heritage operator with heritage liveries or an operator using cost effective practices to grow their business like retaining paint that doesn't need to be changed for the time being?
