"Carbon off-set" is just a theory, there's no evidence that it does anything at all.

I'm not entirely sure this is true but by using an off-set it does demonstrate RE doesn't provide a solution to provide power when the customer needs it and that coal/gas will be part of the mix for years to come until RE can step up.

But as anyone who knows that region will tell you there will be big floods eventually, there were large ones in 2010 & 2011, and 'catastrophic' ones in 1983, 1981, 1916 and 1909 and lots of minor ones in between. The townships of Glenorchy, Rupanyup, Murtoa and Horsham can be badly affected - mitigation in Horsham hasn't stopped floods getting into the CBD even recently.

Amen to that, it's all just theoretical, there's no actual basis to Yarra Trams claim that a Siemens C-class tram running at 11.20pm down St.Kilda Road is running on pure wind/solar power at that time - at any given time actually. They base their claim on the contribution that wind and solar makes to the grid at times that are plucked out of the air. It's all rubbish invented by some PR agency to make it look like The People's Republic of Dan Andrews gives a damn about the planet. They don't.

China is already the biggest 'carbon polluter' in the world and they're set to get even bigger with a massive 121 new coal-fired plants to come on line in the next few years in addition to their existing 987 coal plants. From ZeroHedge:

Across China, a whopping 148GW of heavily-polluting, coal-fired plants are either being built or are about to begin construction, according to a report from Global Energy Monitor, a non-profit group that monitors coal stations. Putting that number in context, the current capacity of the entire EU coal fleet is 149GW, or the same as what China is about to add. It's interesting to recall the history of the numerous floods in the Wimmera, there's been some really catastrophic ones although Horsham weir and the diversion around the south of the main town have generally been helpful in managing it - lives were lost in many of the large 19th/early 20th century ones. The Wimmera river itself is interesting too in that it drains into Lake Albacutya instead of out to the ocean like most major Aussie rivers.

I believe the trend in greenhouse gas emissions won't be stopped let alone reversed before 2050 and by then other factors will come into play. However it will drive more efficient technologies for both generation and consumption of energy. In the absence of hot/cold wars and a space race, trying to address climate change is a good thing.

Until 1980 the global temps were pretty much static, but a consistent trend up since.

However as of 1980, CO2 emissions was 20Bt annually, but rising consistently since 1950's and doubled from 1980 to 2017.

China has by far been the highest since 2002 as manufacturing exported to China, so its not a China problem.

Regardless the two trends of CO2 and global temps do not correlate well.

Unfortunately the zealots in this country are insisting that it IS our problem, hence we've been forced to close down the cheap, reliable sources of domestic power and install elaborate unreliable 'carbon neutral' sources such as solar and wind-farms PLUS spend billions altering the grid to support that rubbish. At least South Australia is about to lose its crown for the most expensive domestic power in the world - Victoria is set to overtake us on January 1st 2020 with a hike of seven percent on domestic electricity charges.

We're one of the world's largest coal exporters but we're not allowed to burn the stuff ourselves - same with uranium. Hawke's "clever country" was the polar opposite of what we've become - we're the dumb country.
