QUBE hit the Melbourne - Adelaide trail

QUBE 2MA7 departed Appleton Dock @ approx 1515hrs this arvo bound for Adelaide loaded with containers (not sure if loaded/or empty) with QBX005/QBX001/GML10 upfront.

A rumour they were wanting to start a services on the AM/MA corridor has been around for over a year. Hopefully it becomes a regular thing.

Id be guessing they might have a bit of truck traffic on the corridor already?

I wonder if anyone can verify if this is new traffic to rail or if the operators are just playing pass the parcel again?

Given how much freight NR/PN have lost from the corridor in recent decades (excluding Perth loading) then it may not be a bad thing to welcome an alternative operator in this instance.

Indeed and I wonder if / how this ties in with Qube's Adelaide Freight Precinct at Outer Harbour including 10000Sqm warehouse that we were discussing on RP a few weeks ago

Good news I reckon, increased competiion on the corridor may have the effect of dragging some lost business back to rail especially as Qube is not just a rail operator but an integrated logistics group

Thanks.

Good to see it may get put to some use then.

Anything that gets more trucks off the road between Adelaide and Melbourne can't be a bad thing.

Based on the attempts of QRN/Aurizon and GWA to compete on the Melbourne-Adelaide route, there's a very real chance that this will actually lead to rail as a whole losing market share.

Road operators love it when rail operators start squabbling over their piece of the pie. It's a great opportunity for them to sneak in and get some for themselves.

GWA certainly never attempted to compete on the Melbourne-Adelaide-Melbourne corridor. They merely operated as requested as a hook and pull provider for Patrick and later POTA and its various iterations. In a similar vein to the Toll traffic that operated from 1995-2001. Eventually PN had all the Patrick and Toll business handed to it on a plate and despite very little direct competition still managed to lose a fair swag of that business.

I'd say there is a good chance in this instance QUBE are using rail for certain stuff for which they previously used road, and which PN probably lost several years ago.

I recall GWA working into NSW for a while between was it parkes and adelaide or similar?

I hope it works for Qube.

Why doesn't GWA do some intermodal work east/west?   They would surely have loading for the WA and Eastern States coming off the Darwin line?

QUBE do currently move quite a few boxes between Melbourne and Adelaide by road. If these are to be now moved by rail, surely this is a win. That is all I was thinking.

From the pics I've seen it was loaded with containers in both directions. Gossip suggests another train 4MA7 ex Melbourne this afternoon.

Ok so a rough count(*):

FEU- 55
TEU- 19
Tanktainer - 7

Not sure what the train length or weight is of course but those numbers look like decent numbers if they can be repeatable.  Thats probably close to 40 trucks worth id be very roughly guessing?

(*) based on one count, i could be out by some and am happy to be corrected.
