Could this be the first example of a heritage railway (Picton to Buxton) running a service for the RFS or CFA for any preservation railway?

Apparently they've done it on previous occasions to Buxton as well.

Reading now that the fire has crossed the rail line and the Hume is closed.   The news article didn't detail which line though.
Buxton would seem to be right in the line of fire and people from Tahmoor are being told to head toward Picton.

Yes the RTM has helped out the local area on at least one previous occasion in my recollection.
Fire crossing rail line at Balmoral would mean the loop line .

Word is that its crossed both the Loop Line and the Main Line.

Feel for all the locals in the area.

Hi all,
The then NSWRTM ran several refill runs to near the Balmoral RFS location with one or more their water tanks during the Christmas Day bushfires in 2001. The use of their (SWT??) rail tankers cut the refill times for the NSWRFS units significantly when compared to refilling from the available street hydrants.

I have seen a photo of former AI&S diesel D1 on the tankers at Balmoral, but I can't remember where. From memory, this was later reported in their Roundhouse magazine and the NSWRFS magazine, as well as getting at least 1 mention in Sydney newspapers.

  ssaunders Train Controller

A good cause, many of the Thirlmere workshop workers live int eh area as well so a win win.

Hi all,
I have heard an unconfirmed report of bushfire damage to NSWRM loop line at Buxton. Extent of damage is unknown.

Some conjecture by me - given the catastrophic damage to the Balmoral township, it might be a long while before anything gets to Balmoral on the Loop line rails again.

A 44 could pull a lot more than that. And what happened to the six wheeled water gin we used to use?

More to the point what happened to the multitude of ex AN water gins that were left with the end of Gangs at line locations on the Trans-Australian Railway?

On Friday 03/01/20, a THNSW train was observed waiting in the Loop Line at the Picton Frame with 4490 leading 3 x Water Gins, facing towards Sydney.  Observed from SN42 about 09:20.  Later observation was 1 x Gin at Bundanoon in Up Refuge and 2 x Gins at Wingello in Down Refuge for firefighting purposes.  4490 had apparently returned to Thirlmere.  Observed from SN57 between 18:15 and 18:45.  Repeat observation of Gin locations on Saturday 04/01/20, but this time observed from nearby roads.

Why not deploy more trains using this method across the country.

For firefighting ?

They use pumper trucks on dams to replenish fire tankers.

If reticulated water Is available at adequate pressure, a stand pipe would be used, If the pressure Is Inadequate, a pumper truck would be used.

No water available In the area where firefighting Is required, unlikely there would be a serviceable railway nearby and a train available to carry water.

All well and good so long as there's a railhead where it's needed. It wouldn't help with the East Gippsland fires in Vic. for example as the nearest line would be too far away.
