Stage 1a of the rail trail from Lilydale to Healesville finally opened recently (27 Dec 2019) so I rode along there today and was surprised that the wall of the platform at Yerring (the current end of the path) had been rebuilt.

Interesting to see how long the rail trail lasts, especially now that the land from astation St back to the quarry on the maroondah Hwy is all up for Sale, with housing in mind.

The area around the old Yering station site is now nicely set up, with new fencing, plenty of car parking, and at times there is a small van on site dispensing coffee and other goodies.  The next stage of the trail, from Yering to Yarra Glen,is to start in Q1 2020, but could take a while as there are some bridges to replace, including the one over the river.

Recently I found out that there were some signs with heritage information on them installed a few months ago so I went to check them out today.
I like how they were made out of old railway sleepers, although they look too young to be from the Healesville line.
It's interesting that they've used photos from Weston Langford's web site, and that Yering now has a second car park right behind the platform.

Work on the next section (from Yering to Yarra Glen) is expected to start later this year and finish in 2021.

This was the longest remnant of the elevated trestle bridges between Yering and Yarra Glen, as referred to in one of the above photos.  The actual river crossing is at the top left, and the location is just south of Yarra Glen.

Unfortunately, this bridge (and several others) was destroyed in the 2009 "Black Saturday" bushfires.

Apologies for the poor quality - scanned from an old and faded print.

It will be interesting to see how the new trail will deal with this bit.

A new rather long pedestrian/bike bridge will be constructed on the down (northern/western) side of the original bridge openings across the Yarra towards Yarra Glen station.

Lad_Porter; don't apologise for the quality of the photo. It is a beauty just for what it shows. It's clear, and easy to see all the features. Thanks for putting it up.
