Confused as to whether this proposal is the rebuilding of the existing line from Canberra Line junction to Bombala and then connecting to Eden on the coast?

Can I get some feedback on how this line would be built even if it is a press release from a candidate running in the seat of Eden.  I can only see a way to rebuild the Cooma line and a branch personally.

The candidate is the one blowing his mouth off; ask him!

I thoroughly approve of allowing every opportunity for joke candidates to dig their own grave.

Is that response not a little churlish?

Not at all.

Jason 'Potty' Potter is the one pushing the proposal, it would be inappropriate of us to make assumptions as to how he plans to do it instead of letting him speak for himself.

I think it is a great idea. The line should be looped back up the coast to Batemans Bay, and back to Canberra. The line from Bomaderry should be extended down to Batemans Bay. There is a lot of tourist traffic and freight that could use this extension.

Better than money being wasted on a high speed train.

Surprised by the responses here from users about a visionary putting into it there for people to consider. Why not have some vision for the south coast ?

How do you have projects without vision ?

Many people have visions and the majority of them should be locked up. In this case, the bloke's vision is "Let me say something and get my name in the paper."

That is another vision.

Both of these posts are driven by Railfan Vision. How much tourist traffic would there be? How much and what sort of freight? I'll be nice to you and leave out things like cost, routing et al. Just answer these two questions.

There was already a thread some months ago on this very topic, which was done to death at the time.

In short, a proposal invest billions for the benefit of a handful of potential travellers from Canberra to the coast (remember it’s an easy drive at time of your choosing) and a few kilos of seafood to make the return journey.

It certainly doesn’t trump my desire for a high speed, hourly service from Mudgee to Sydney.

I don't think he's a visionary though. If he had a compelling vision for this project he would be telling the world about it instead of leaving us to guess at it.

I also don't know why he's talking about it as part of his candidacy for the Commonwealth Parliament. I had a look at the Federation Party's website and found a 'Position / Policy Development' page which places particular emphasis on Section 51 of the constitution, a section which makes it clear that railway policy is developed by the states. Does he not know the difference between the state and Commonwealth parliaments?

That is another vision.

Railfan Vision is a euphemism for some kind of controlled substance, right?

A big meeting of the community took place over the past 24 hours confirming the line would be rebuilt to Cooma and a new branch built to Eden including rail to the hardstand at the port of Eden.  The development proposal was also discussed on ABC radio yesterday where it was confirmed an international railway engineer had done the proposal work for the community and $2b had been sort from the federal government to realise a dream of over 100 years ago.  The line has been surveyed from Cooma to Eden as a part of the NSWGR times in the early 1900's.

Is the line going to be privately owned? If not, did the meeting think it might be a good idea to get the railways involved with plans and costs and money allocated to actually make it happen?

This is just hilarious.

What would an international railway engineer know about Australian conditions.

We have the same naive numpties running around in South Australia as well. Just makes its so, so much harder getting genuine projects off the ground Sad

So let's spend $2bn with no estimates of patronage or freight.

Let's draw a line on the map, anywhere on the map and say we need a railway and the taxpayers can pay for it.

Grow up FFS.

Probably the wrong thread, but can we have a BS button, please?

The best we have atm is “funny” which really doesn’t do justice to a big meeting of a community someplace deciding to use $2b of government money without approval on a project that was dreamed up 100 years ago and has presumably not been justifiable on patronage grounds during that entire period.

Time to party like it's 1890
  justapassenger Minister for Railways

With 69 of 87 polling places returned so far, 99.7% of the Eden-Monaro electorate (i.e. everyone but 108 voters) has rejected Potty's insane agenda.

He won't get his deposit back, so on behalf of the Australian taxpayer I thank him for his contribution.

EDIT: just noticed the HEMP Party was in the race, so Potter probably didn't have much hope of controlling the stoner vote.
