City Center Monorail Station has been demolished

I was at the City today where the monorail once stand. And at City Center station, there is now a big concrete block. Covered up by scaffolding. City Center Station has seemed to be covered up by this big concrete wall, and seems like the station itself will become a shop inside City Center. I have taken photo's, but were unable to upload them. If there is more information or photo's of City Center as it is right now in June 2020 would be greatly appreciated. As I have a profound interest in the monorail

Sorry to hear about that. I used to absolutely adore the monorail as a kid in the late 80s/early 90s. I still think back on it fondly, practicality be damned. Very Happy ????

I have never forgiven Gladys for pulling the Monorail down. I was a frequent user on my trips to Sydney and still miss the service.

Clover is also looking foolish for her support of the light rail. I agree that the monorail doesn't look so bad now. Out of the way and reasonably quick.

Went nowhere though.  Pulling it into DH killed its initial plans to do what the current LR from CQ to Central now does.

As much as I did want the monorail to stay, it was really not that useful
It became more of a tourist train than a mode of transport in it's last 20 years and was heavily underutilised towards the end of its life
In many ways the monorail was a failure, it didn't go anywhere that the general public needed to go to and it obstructed redevelopments at Darling Harbour
If it had stations throughout the city connecting to office blocks it would be far more useful
I never went on it but did see it occasionally in its final years and it was easy to see that maintenance levels and patronage were extremely low

The current LR to Central really doesn't do anything that can't be done by the Sydney trains network.

Although it does avoid the need for train replacement buses doing laps of the CBD when the City Inner, City Outer or Shore are closed for trackwork. Much easier now to put on additional trams between Central and Circular Quay.

@scadam I agree, the LR is extremely valuable as a redundant connection between the core city stations, even if you’re not using it standardly. In a few years we’ll have another independent system as well.

Should make those inevitable breakdowns on the city circle a bit more bearable, everyone, at least everyone will still be able to get to Central or Wynyard/Barangaroo Smile

Aside from when the LR isn't working and you then need tram replacement buses.
