Looks like the Great Southern has been officially diverted via Broken Hill to avoid Victoria in 2020/21.

Let's hope the NSW/QLD border opens!

State borders will be open in a matter of weeks meaning any restrictions will not be around and making the train journey what it was.

If the diversion materialized it would basically be an IP extended to Brisbane, except not entering Central.

Just as well the Southern Spirit is diverted, we Vics do not want any Queenslanders here,  our state is a mess without them adding to it....................

How exactly would Queenslanders doing a tour of the GOR or Grampians affect you?

From what I read in the media, I don't think that will be case. They have made their itineraries, marketing and commercial arrangements.

They are taking are probably taking the risk into account that Victoria has the highest risk of any state having to go back into a lockdown before a vaccine is broadly available, for which is unfortunate.

It's OK Fatty, I was going to bite too, but I realised it must be the cabin fever that he is going through. Something that is a bit hard to understand as I had only 2 weeks of lockdown in sunny Qld, so it is a bit hard to understand what the Vics are going through for the past several months.

I agree with you a bit weird about not having Qlders going there for a holiday, considering that the Victorian tourism and hospitality industry is struggling. He must think having banana bender pesos is a bad thing. We will welcome the Victorian shillings when they finally get their act together. In fact we are enjoying some right now, thanks to the AFL. That Gabba AFL final is going to be historic. I think they need to get King Wally Lewis to do the coin toss, to give them the Qld flavour Laughing.

Interestingly, their website and Facebook page still state that they are travelling via Victoria, but bypassing Victoria and/or N.S.W. is still an option if need be.

Thankyou Jack for clarifying. It shows that my assumptions are wrong. Looks like they have their contingency in place, if they are marketing this.

I get how they would bypass Victoria, but if they have to bypass N.S.W. Where are they going to go? Just yo-yo up and down the Adelaide Hills for a couple of days then stick their passengers on an Airbus to Brissy?

No

The Great Southern will continue to run via Cootamundra.
The Indian Pacific counts the Blue Mountains as one of the attractions.
It is sometimes diverted via Cootamundra but that is an exception.

The Journey Beyond website now shows the route via Broken Hill with off train visit there, continuing on to visit Canberra the next day then Coffs Harbour and on to Brisbane. The return trip is as per last year to Cootamundra and then back via BH.

I do wonder if it will ever return via Melbourne and Victoria. Could be a permanent change in the end.

It will probably be back.

It was always planned that The Great Southern would change its program from one season to the next.
