It was tongue and cheek given the sand mine is going through approvals and upsetting the locals. While the local ABC left media takes every opportunity to give platform to green agendas they happily ignore this 'passenger bridge'. Its not a long bow to draw to say this bridge is being upgraded in support of the mine. Just games.
While I've not seen the details myself, there is apparently a proposal by Fennings in bairnsdale for an intermodal terminal at the log yard on Bosworth rd. Logs themselves are probably dead, although fennings had a large amount of stockpiled finished product in that yard when i was last there. They may end up being their own customer while they can still get logs to mill. The main trucking company in the area needs some viable competition, and this could very well be it.
There has been several proposals over the years to get the copper mine at Benambra going again as well, with significant amounts of product spouted to come out of that. Enough to justify rail use out of Bairnsdale. Yes, the sand mine, if it happens, will be looking for rail access, and will be a significant user of the track.
There are opportunities east of and maybe around stratford for further rail development. the old bridge has, as we all know, been the constraining factor.
