Good to see some limited progress but wonder why they did not consider just lifting the old spans off and replacing them?  Was this considered?

The existing old bridge is remaining I heard - who's going to put in the money to maintain it ?  It might be old and now heritage listed but I'm not sure whether it's worth keeping.

Whilst the bridge is a decent structure, the option of placing the rail trial upon the bridge is always there but the down side of that is it would take the uses away from the town centre but a little signage would bring them around back to the C.B.D. The timber approaches on the flood plain are the most venerable                  You are correct PE2020 it would take lots of money  . The government has always got money to spend on communities whether its protecting street art or grants for people to paint fallen leaves or knit scarves for gum trees .

If one watches the drone footage supplied by thekingoffoxes and looks for the bridge at 1.20 mins /sec between the Princess Hwy and the Avon River, they will see a small bridge with 3 piers carrying the rail line. Back in 1998 this used to be 2 x 900mm barrel culverts. There was a large flood and the culverts couldn't handle the volume of water from the Avon River which was flooding all the way up to the Princess Hwy.As a result of the culverts being blocked, the railway was washed away and it looked like the end of the line. Fortunately the line was rebuilt and amazingly the engineer’s didn’t renew the culvert with the same 2 barrel design but a  much much larger bridge was constructed. The same type that we see being rebuilt today. Some lessons were learnt. It’s a truly wonderful legacy for the district that a new bridge over the Avon River is being constructed and that this railway has been able to remain open and will continue to flourish into the future.

Freight Victoria reopened the line In 1999 using their RTL as motive power beyond Sale.

River could be on the way up again with anything up to, and possibly more, 150mm of rain forecast in parts of gipsland over the next 48 hours. One would imagine construction crews removed equipment from the river bead this afternoon, if it wasn't out already.

Rainfall is not expected to far west of Bairnsdale, but it could be enough west to put a few meters of height into the river given its just been up. Doesn't take much to get the Avon going.

I thought some people might be interested in some footage I have been taking over the last few months of the bridge works, with trains on the existing bridge of course. It's been interesting to watch the foundations going in and the first few bridge spans being installed over June - August. I haven't been over to look for the last few weeks due to the current covid - 19 restrictions, so not sure where they are up to with the bridge now. More rain has fallen recently so that might put the brakes on works somewhat. I have some still photo's from my drone that I wlll try and find as well.

It was tongue and cheek given the sand mine is going through approvals and upsetting the locals.  While the local ABC left media takes every opportunity to give platform to green agendas they happily ignore this 'passenger bridge'.   Its not a long bow to draw to say this bridge is being upgraded in support of the mine. Just games.
