Hi all

Question about design of bogies used in modern locos and self propelled passenger rolling stock.

Do they still use cast or partly cast bogies or is it all fabricated now ?

Any Australian examples made from after say 1990 of cast?

From a Queensland perspective, I don't think Downer Maryborough (and its predessors) has used cast bogies for decades - or at least since 1979. To the best of my knowledge, the EMU, IMU, SMU and Tilt bogies are fabricated, along with the electric loco bogies and the radial bogies on the GT42CU-AC and GT42CU-ACe classes. A series of fabricated coal wagon bogies with rubber suspension were also made in the Maryborough plant around 1985 for testing (the rubber didn't handle in-traffic conditions well).

UGL's 2800 class introduced between 1995 and 1998 also have fabricated bogies.

Not Australian built, but Watco's new NRE-built WRA class do have cast bogies with GE traction motors.

My dad was asking, going by the limited photos I could find on the www, it appeared to be all fabricated on the newer stuff that was more easily spots on photos from Qld. Sydney stock is much harder as the have covers over the bogies.

I'm not surprised about USA stock retaining cast.

I believe NRE rebuilds use a lot of reconditioned second hand parts. As there are a lot of six axle EMD/GE bogies available in the US it's not surprising NRE use them. The underframes may also be second hand SD40.

Recent USA imports, 1100/1200/Watco, use new Bradken 5650 bogies, from either their Chinese foundries, or from their Atchison or St. Joseph foundries in the USA.

With the ARTC 132 ton limit on sg locos with rigid bogies, the domestic US cast bogies are too heavy.

Bradken use several cast marks including Atchison and Americast, however the 5650 cast nomenclature is common.

NRE recently joint ventured with the Genrail Syndicate (via the SAFRail holding company) in South Africa, acquiring a large foundry at Vereeniging. So now have an interest in a foundry, in a country with a lower wage structure than coastal China, using English as a second language, capable of casting bogies and couplers.  

The Vereeniging site also has a steel fabrication hall with cranes. The JV partners have been fabricating container wagons here for Genrail's open access operation on the TAZARA. NRE own the intellectual property used by RRL (now liquidated) to build GT26CU-3 clones in SA. If the President's decision to open access rail in SA comes to fruition, NRE/Genrail can quickly restart production.

The frames of recent NRE imports into Australia are new fabrications, if you look carfully the 1100/Watco are the same fishbelly type used by RRL and Grindrod Locomotives in South Africa. https://www.facebook.com/NRECareers/photos/717279978674490

Since the takeover of GE Transportation by Wabtec, unsure of what is occurring now. GE were procuring their cast bogies for domestic use, from SCAW in South African. Most recent lighter GE export types have used fabricated bogies licensed from UGL. UGL granted Transnet Engineering a license to manufacture this bogie in SA, TE have produced over 900 bogies under this license for use in SA.
