50,000 tonnes of batteries and lead per annum into the community by road.
The chinese have just been given approval to build and operate a lead smelter at Hazelwood. Is rail planned for both inbound and outbound materials? No. 50000 tonnes isn't a lot, relatively speaking. You would need 10x that amount to even have a Govt or business consider it for rail. 50000 tonnes is 1000 B-doubles/year. 3 per day.
With the industrial estate being created was rail considered in the design? The industrial area in question has never had rail capability - it is about 1km as the crow flies from the proposed Gippsland Logistics Precinct, still in development. The comparatively small quantities of batteries will presumably come from a range of supply points and would require transhipping at each end, so not contestable business.
How far from the rail network is the site and is intermodal transfer available?
