Yep. At a time when governments are being urged to borrow and spend up big on infrastructure this type of project would seem to fit the bill perfectly. Done right it could mean much better avenues to port for our agricultural exports with 30 > 50 years of low maintenance requirements leading to many years of benefits. But as you say there is no appetite to do anything like that in Vic, just keep trying (and failing) to patch up the network as more and more freight is lost to road and our farmers bear the cost through lower returns from the sale of their produce

Funny that they constantly maintain that all their Covid decisions are based on advice from 'medical experts' implying that politics and votes are not a consideration (believe that if you are that silly) and yet take no notice of experts in transport fields.

Interesting that we now have two monumental failures running the place:
  • Covid:  Jeroen Weimar (failure at PTV - 'we run so many trains that the rails get hot').
  • Victoria:  Jacinta Allan of Murray Basin SG rail infamy.

We're doomed, doomed doomed (Private Frazer in Dad's Army)

I wonder who the transport experts are that they should be listening to as equally?

Sadly all the deck chairs are of poor quality. Some are even made in China I believe. Even the new Titanic is being built (or not) in China.

We cant keep blaming China for poor quality chairs and poor workmanship, they have enough problems of there own. I was told today that the Chinese National Cricket team was sent home because they ate all the bats, but I don't  know if this is any truth in this rumour.

New timber is fine, easy to drill some holes later and slide across..

Hopefully not too many BG concretes to take out...

This is great, but the timing couldn't be worst, plus this is only catch up maintenance for the past years of neglect. As the article states, annual maintenance is required to keep the track up to some kind of standard, especially with wooden sleepers. None the less it is better than nothing.

On the Vicsig site, see the updated notes regarding Sea Lake if anyone is interested.

  kuldalai Chief Commissioner

We should be using gauge convertible steel sleepers as in NSW, cheaper than concrete and 4 times the life of wood. Or gauge convertible low profile concrete sleepers which are available from Austrak, but for some strange reason VLP seem highly allergic too. Apparently word iis secrtion Sea Lake to Berriwillock is primarily concrete broad gauge sleepers run out, and a mix of concrete and wood between Berriwillock and Wycheproof .

Just perpetuates a high maintenance freight track in continuing to use wooden sleepers 15 year life when steel or concrete have a life around 50 years.
Secondly very shortsighted in installing lots of broad gauge sleepers which inevitably will have to come out when these lines are standardized within the next decade or so.

Rail them from Mildura  ... via Dunolly and swap them to broad gauge wagons.   If we still have sleeper wagons that is.  Wink
