VG, please excuse my obvious ignorance, but how does the word "temporary" relate to any part of the original clue?

It was a temporary service to one line, i.e. not continuous.

Is that really the best you've got?!  I think the phrases most relevant to the original clue would have been "part-time" or "pesk-only" and definitely not "temporary". But those wouldn't have pointed towards the answer being Tempe.

In any case, all of Sydney's suburban lines have little or no service overnight. Does that make each day's schedule "termporary"? In my opinion only the second supplementary clue, unpublished prior to the reveal, would have been properly cryptic in its structure.

I reckon AheadMatthewawesome was closer to the mark on this one than you gave hin credit for. Which was none! I'm pretty thick-skinned, he seems less so.

No; it isn't; the bottom line is quite simple. It was solved without any prompting.

QED.

Bit surprised VG hasn't jumped back in here with a point of order. Because s3_gunzel's original clue seems also not to be a cryptic! Steve
Perhaps you would now like to revise that opinion.
Valvegear
Thank you for your suggestion but "No", I'll stand by my opinion.

You've said yourself (November 12th) that: "Ideally, a cryptic is a play on words, a hidden anagram or acrostic, or a question that does not require specific local knowledge". Specific local knowledge of service routes and daily running patterns would have been essential to derive "Tempe" from the original clue in this puzzle.

And I still don't see how regular "time of day" variations of service stopping patterns could conjure up the word "temporary" in anyone's mind as a cryptic device to decipher the original clue. Post-facto justification?!

Not guilty, and released could that be Fairfield?

Is anyone aware of a more complete, up to date and comprehensive list of stations covered by this quiz?

I've said it once; I'll say it again. Another player solved it quickly and with no prompting. You couldn't, but now want to keep blaming the quiz master ( and my opinion) for your failure to understand it. Sorry; it won't wash.

Not Fairfield.

Happy to give a hint if people want one.

Loosen up guys. I avoid cryptic puzzles like the plague, I don't think that way, but I follow this page because I like following the masters who do, reason their way to the answer. I also find out all sorts of historical gems used to justify the clues. Keep enjoying yourselves people.

This listing - https://nswtrains.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Sydney_railway_stations - includes Metro stations

Neither that link nor Wikipedia includes stations in the outer metropolitan area under the wires. Cityrail, the now-out-of-date entity (still used in the title of the present site) operated as far away as Goulburn, Dungog, Bomaderry etc. Current usage on the present Railpage site seems to extend only as far as the wires.

A dated and imperfect guide to outer metropolitan stations, and beyond, is contained in https://nswrail.net/lines/nsw-map.php. That map does not distinguish between electrified and non-electrified stations.

Is there any agreement that the borders for clues on NSW-Cityrail Where is it?-CRYPTIC  VERSION site are best defined by:
  • Newcastle Interchange, to the North.
  • Kiama, to the South
  • Lithgow, to the West
  • Macarthur, to the South-West?

No trouble. I guess Metro stations are now eligible for inclusion?
