    One of Australia’s greatest ever cricketers, Shane Warne, has died of a suspected heart attack.

    He was 52.

    Warne’s manager, James Erskine, confirmed in a statement to the Herald and The Age that Warne died in Thailand.

    “It is with great sadness we advise that Shane Keith Warne passed away of a suspected heart attack in Koh Samui, Thailand today, Friday 4th March,” the statement says.

    I have no interest in cricket whatsoever, but regret his passing at such a young age.

    Sadly, this says a lot for living an unhealthy lifestyle.

    Warne also had severe Covid last year which put him on a ventilator.  Possibly a factor in his passing.

    Shocked to read this and to hear the news.  A brilliant cricketer and someone who gladfully and regularly gave up his time for charitable pursuits and to assist others.  it was his work that raised the money for the rebuild of the Galle Cricket Ground (a ground I have been to) post the Tsunami.

    Unbelievable - 52 is much too young.

    In one week, Australia has lost four elite athletes, Middle Distance champion John Landy, Olympic Gold Medal cyclist Dean Woods, then Marsh and Warne.

    Warnie. Just Warnie. It is customary at a time so sombre, serious and upsetting to put it more formally: Shane Keith Warne, Australian cricket hero, is dead at 52.


    But right now, as fans reel from the news, it is impossible to avoid conjuring images of Warne that are not sombre and serious at all. How could a "Warnie" moment ever be sombre and serious?


    He's windmilling his bowling arm after taking a wicket. He's dancing on the balcony with a stump over his head. He's sending that perfect leg-break past a flummoxed Mike Gatting — the ball of that century, and probably all others — launching himself from the status of budding star to immortal in one flick of the wrist.

    He was once told by a doctor he'd be lucky to make it past 45 with his lifestyle, so I guess he had a good run.

    Offer of State funeral and renaming Southern Stand at the MCG are both in indecent haste for political purposes.
    Not saying that either/both shouldn't happen but after an appropriate interval.

    Agree on both counts.
    State funerals have become like Australia Day Honours and Australian of the Year Awards. Often (BUT NOT ALWAYS) handed out for political gain.
    Comparing the biographies of Landy and Warne makes interesting reading. Both great in their specific field but life's comparison ends there.
    Yet another big mouth no brain politician/s opening mouth/s for perceived purely political gain.

    Emerging news Mr. Warne was experiencing heart related issues weeks prior to his death.  I also read he had been in hospital with covid.

    Politics has nothing to do with it. The guy has to be put to rest at some point and state funerals are seemingly held for all and sundry these days, particularly sports celebrities'.

    Up until recent times, state funerals were only held for deceased senior politicians and leading members of the judiciary.

    The renaming of a stand at the MCG also has nothing to do with government and perhaps refer your concerns to the Melbourne Cricket Club which are the custodians of the MCG.

    Pakulos announced the name change for the stand within 24 hours of the poor bugger's death. Hardly time for anyone to give proper consideration to anything.

    You might be happy to contribute towards his funeral I am not. He is allegedly only worth $ 50 million after all.

    That would be the LOAN to the MCG Trust for the latest refurb of the Warnie Stand ( aka Great Southern Stand).

    That loan, and the oriiginal finance of the GSS and Members Stand is repaid by THE MEMBERS.
    It's my money paying for your seat, so stop whinging.

    PS   Warnie was a member of the MCC waiting decades in the waiting queue like the rest of us. He was of course much more than just a member.

    You have such a pleasant way of showing that you disagree.

    In any event, just take a look (Google will do) to see how much Federal and State government money goes into the MCG (and other) redevelopments. You might even care to remember that the MCG is owned by the State government and administered by the MCG Trust.

    I remember fans at a cricket ground somewhere in Australia holding up a large banner during one of his early games that got the attention of the telecast. It went something like this:

    Be [or, "You have been"] WARNED, to SLEEP on the BORDER during WAUGH may cause DYER consequences.

    How good was that banner? How great was Warne!
