you should not need a decoder to add the lighting,  just a simple circuit with a resistor and diode, i have not experimented with this, i would imagine that there may be a slight flicker to the light ...

what i do is put the resistor on the positive leg of the LED, as close as possible to the LED its self, make the LED leg shorter, wrap wround one led of the resistor and solder in place, this way each ...
