I've been rethinking my first clue, and I'm not actually sure if the station or town came first. But the town was definitely a company town.

Wandong was the site of a timber seasoning works which was fed with sawn timber by tramway from a number of mills in the Mount Disappointment area. There were a number of BG sidings at Wandong for outward timber traffic.
