Thanks Nightfire for filling in some blanks while I am out of the country. I see nothing has changed since I left in March.

A drive to Berrimah this morning revealed 5DA2 with a FQ (02 I think), a ALF and an EL on a very long train, in the yards was a EL with a ALF, both facing south. Up at the statio there was the 3 VL's on the Union Reef onloading. Sorry, didn't get any numbers.

News just in, 7AD1 due into Berrimah at 09:30 today will be arriving at around 20:00, it was late out of Adelaide by about 6 hours. At a guess for it to have lost another 4 hours I would say it has had to wait for crosses.
The loco's are a CL, VL and EL. I was told he numbers but can not find them now.

Great photos Nightfire.

What type of wagons were the tankers on?  I couldn't quite make out the designation from the photo.

Keep up the goog work,

Cheers, Ike

It looks like they are putting an overpass in at the Berrimah Rd level crossing. They cleared the land a few weeks ago and the piles of dirt have been placed both sides of the line. They are moving very quick on it, I guess they are trying to beat the worst of the wet season.

Class FPPY...
Twin articulated Piggyback wagons purchased second hand from Canadian National, originally the British Columbia Railway. They have kept the original green paint and the 7300 series numbers they had in Canada. Most of these wagons are used as container wagons with a different code.

When you have ten minutes up your sleeve, head up Wishart Road and have a look at the work going on at the Tivendale Road Intersection. Work so far includes:
-Speed limit reduction from 100 to 60 km/h either side of the intersection
-Removal of the advace warning boards and lights from both sides of the crossing
-Addition of a new level crossing between the two existing crossings

Where this all gets hazy is going to be the alignment of the roads-does the Palmerston end of Wishart go across the new crossing and meet as a "T" intersection where the Berrimah end of Wishart Road meets Tivendale Road or is there some other set up planned. The signs either side of the roadwork show a complete realiginmet and the web address http://www.growingnt.nt.gov.au on the signs has no information on this intersection.

I had a look at that mess the other day, in the end there will just be the new crossing that they are putting in, the Wishart Rd and Tivedale Rd crossings will go. A mate that is working on the Tiger Brennen Extension said the job has a completion date of early Dec.

The one thing that stuck out to me when I traveled the Berrimah terminal on the Ghan was the presents of level crossings, In the built up area around Palmerston, Elrundie, Tivendale and Berrimah.

The construction economics these days, just about class a greenfield road / rail grade separating as more economical In the medium term, when you stat counting all the cost associated with an at grade crossing.

But looking on Google Maps, 3 level crossing could be closed between Berrimah and Elrundie (Palmerston) by just re routing some of the local roads along the railway (before the area gets swamped with further development)

That new intersection is going to be a shocker for the run into and out of town with all the Palmerston traffic now having to join Tivendale Road-nothing wrong with the way it was-all that was needed was a road to run alongside the rail line from Wishart to Tivendale Roads to send the trucks up to the Stuart Highway.

In two weeks I'll be no longer working in town-glad I won't have to battle that everyday.

I think the plan is most will go up to where they have put the new overpasses in and join Tiger Brennon there. Still, it is goings to be hell for the people who still come along wishart.

I know we're drifting away from the rail side of the topic but Wishart Road is always busy for an hour each way in the morning, be innterseting to see if the Tiger Brennan Drive extension takes any pressure off Wishart Road.

The new intersection at Wishart 1 is to reduce two close crossings down to 1. Hopefully a speed increase in the track from the current 20 kph will see the rail traffic clear the crossing quicker. I have to agree that it is going to be bad for people coming from Palmerston and the new Wedel area, but the Government wants to push people onto the new road. It will be interesting to see if they put traffic lights on that intersection as the T junction is very close to the rail line. I can see the fools queuing up over the crossing.

The mound of dirt is for a new overpass at Berrimah Road, the one that was supposed to have been built when the line went in. Have a look at where they have had to dig half of the pile away. Some bright spark built up the pile on an existing waterway and the first decent rain of the season washed away most of the new pile. They are now putting in a proper drain. The overpass will have room for 2 tracks underneath it. Within the next couple of years you will see two tracks under it.

Some conduits have appeared by the level crossing, odds on this will be for the control gear for the level crossing.

Monday I'll have another look to see how things are progressing and let ewes know.

Been a while since we had some photo's posted.
Here is some from today's arrival of 5AD1. Some shots are from near where the new works are happening. According to the signs there there will be traffic lights at the new intersection.

What's the other track going to be for ?

A siding for the livestock quarantine station ?

I think you will find it is so they don't have to stop shunting operations to wait for the incomming train to arrive in the yards. I noticed last night there are white pegs at the top of the cutting where the existing line is, indicating widening on the cutting.

At the moment on Monday mornings and at other times when the ore trains arrive the incomming train waits out on the line till the shunting operations is complete. I have seen this take over an hour.

So a head shunt.

How much Is the line out onto the East Arm Wharf used ?
  Shacks Ghanzel

Location: Sir Big Lens of the Distant Upper Hunter
Much of the line towards the wharf is used, mostly for the ore trains. Most of the shunts they do is put the Katherine loading on the front and the loco's, as it is set up right now the loco's and crew car have to shunt out onto the main line then set back onto the train. This will remove the need to block the main line, allowing the incomming train a clear run into the yards.

Removal off the crossing would be a big help for all transport users In the area.

So no rail loading takes place on the wharf at the moment.
  Shacks Ghanzel

Location: Sir Big Lens of the Distant Upper Hunter
The only rail loading on the wharf, which is about 2km from the end of the yards, is the clinker pallets and no more than 100 containers a week. The ore from Francis Crk and Muckerty is trucked from the storage to the ships.
