That is how often the freightlink nes has been updated. There was ment to be a monthly newsletter from FreightLink, but like their trains, it has not stuck to its schedule.

Extra Adel-Darwin rail service starts

FreightLink will add an extra weekly rail service between Adelaide and Darwin because it says demand is growing for transport to the Northern Territory.

There are currently five services a week and the sixth will begin from Thursday.

Chief executive John Fullerton says the rising cost of fuel is making road transport an expensive option.

"We commenced operations back in January 2004 and operated five trains to Darwin from Adelaide and we carried about 500,000 tonnes, so we're now carrying 800,000 tonnes each year and we do require a sixth train to commence operations," he said.

"The longer the distance to haul freight, the more competitive rail is compared to other forms of transport.

"That equally is the same for fuel as prices of fuel increase it makes rail more competitive and I think we're seeing the results of that in terms of freight coming off road onto rail."

FreightLink has been reporting financial losses and has the service on the market.

I found this on the FreightLink website today, it is a good pdf file on the operations of the line.

Freightlink says it is just weeks away from handing the rights to operate the Adelaide to Darwin rail line to an American company.

Regulators have approved a deal that would see Genesee and Wyoming take over the line from Freightlink.

Freightlink was forced to spend about $300,000 to right a freight train and fix a section of track after a derailment in Alice Springs at the weekend.

Its chief executive John Fullerton says the transfer to the new owner should take place in a month or two.

"We're currently working with the new owners, Genesee and Wyoming to work with the Northern Territory and South Australian governments on the transfer of the concession which is the 50-year concession to operate on the railway."

So what is the progress on this?

Any news?

Do G&W labelled power work through at the moment?
Will they allow others to do hook and pull?

What happens to the Freightlink staff, please?

Freightlink it's self has very few staff, train control was done by GWA, crews were provided by GWA, terminal operations in Alice and Darwin is provided by PN, terminal operations in Tennant Creek and Katherine was FCL, I think Lin Fox took that over when they purchased FCL, not sure on Adelaide, it might be GWA. Loco and wagon maintenance is EDI. Line maintenance was a contractor. So in reality, Freightlink had the board of directors and maybe 15 others. Of note, GWA owned 1/3 or Freightlink form the word go.

I think you will find that's incorrect. G&W's stake was always very small when compared to the other equity holders - from memory no more than 5%.

33% was what was shown on the information book we received at the opening of the line.

"574M"

By hook and pull, do you mean other train operators? The answer is 'yes' (and has been since operations commenced in 2004) but obviously under the terms and conditions set by FreightLink (soon to be GWA) for track access.

Great Southern Railway (using PN as their hook and pull provider) already operate the Ghan and Specialised Bulk Rail will operate iron ore trains on the southern stretch of the line.

FreightLink only own 4 mainline units and rely on GWA and CFCLA for all their other motive power needs.

One I left out that operates on the line is Territory Iron, the mine itself lease the loco's, currently 2 VL's and a EL and the wagons from CFCLA, hire the drivers from GWA and pay / payed Freightlink for the access. They run the Francis Creek Mine.
