    The timing is WAY off right now...

    Over the next 12 months expect rumours and maybe occasional snippets in the local paper about the on-again, off-again start of pax services to Maryborough.
    Expect non committal comments from the Minister or the Premier, but expect the Joe Helper to sweat and squirm somewhat if approached directly about it.

    If you really know him, he may even be able to tell you the actual start date. If not then before the end of next year, there will be more press coverage and threats by locals to vote for Peters (PClark's) party.

    After much letter writing and talk-back on radio etc, the Government will acknowledge the Community is energised about getting the train up and running to the now unused, beautifully restored station.

    This groundswell of public opinion will extend to those who may not have given much thought to using the train to go to Melbourne, but it's an interesting study, the 'bandwagon effect'.

    Because there will be a groundswell of positive public opinion, something that didn't happen at Leongatha/Korumburra, there will be an announcement that the worst kept secret, the train will start running, maybe 6 months before the 2010 election, and IMO some services will extend to St Arnaud.

    If Joe Helper retires next Election, he will go out saying he fought to re-introduce the train, which will assist the incoming new Member for Ripon.

    Of course I could be wrong, but the political process usually wins out.

    Well from what I see the Mildura line report clearly states the track upgrade is for freight traffic. I am suprised it didn't read "upgrade for rail traffic" - to play it safe on their part keep it general......something the Government is normally very good at doing!

    The Brumby Government has also committed $50 million to reinstate passenger train services to Maryborough, via Ballarat. The project will include upgrading the track, associated signalling works and train stabling as appropriate.

    “The section of track between Melbourne and Maryborough has already been upgraded as part of the Mildura Freight Upgrade, meaning it is now easier to get it to a standard suitable for passenger services,” Ms Kosky said.

    “And with a $1 million heritage upgrade completed at Maryborough Station earlier this year, the conditions are just right to allow us to restore passenger services. Once complete, passengers can look forward to a daily return service on a VLocity train via Ballarat.

    “This provides terrific opportunities for Maryborough residents to commute to Ballarat and Melbourne for work, study or leisure.”

    IdeaI'm happy to stand corrected regards the political process, especially if it gets new services up and running ahead of election campaigning, however there is still DDA requirements, and or track slewing to be met at Creswick, Clunes and possibly Talbot, unless the plan is to run express Maryborough/Ballarat services.

    Just had a call from Blinkey (who is down in Melb today), to say that there will be new trains, a new station for Creswick and the whole thing planned to be up and running within 18 months....

    Hmm a new station for Creswick.. is it really needed I am sure the current one could do with some track mods.

    Creswick just needs Its platform extended outwards towards the mainline(using steel and concrete)

    14 Ups and 14 Downs could = 28 services a week

                                 0r

    7 Ups and 7 Downs could = 14 sevices a week

    I think Marybourough should get at least 3 Ups and 3 Downs a day as does Ararat.

     They do initially, remember Sherwood Park Exclamation

    That gives plenty of opportunity to increase services when the 2010 campaign starts, and they can compare that to Ted's and Agent Mulder's virtually non-existent PT policy which doesn't even figure a returned rail service to Maryborough.

    Perhaps we do understand the political process

    In any case I am delighted and will make sure the process continues to the end. The 14 services is a bit lean but we now have something to work with. Let it be a message to other communities... it can be done (but I will feel a lot more comfortable when I ride that first train out of Maryborough

    Not only is the idea of a new station a waste of money, this theory of extending the current platform is crazy. Its pretty straight forward, slew the track back to the platform just like it used to be.

    Creswick station building & platform are in pretty decent nick, it would cost less to over-haul than to build a new one.

    What was gained by moving the mainline away from the platform ?

    (Trains could take the curve 5 Km/h faster ?)

    Easier track maintenence for one. (the passenger plan would not have been hatched when the track was straightned).

    Regardless, either the main will need to be slewed back or a new passing siding built.
