Mildura freight in daytime

Over the past few weeks the Mildura freight has been altered to run via North Geelong in the daytime. On Wednesday and Friday morning it is timetable to run:
- Ballarat 0625
- Gheringhap 0745
- North Geelong 0835
- Newport 0930.

Last week Gheringhap Loop had it running to time.

I went out this morning to get it, it didn't get to Bannockburn until 0815, and the sun had to duck behind the clouds:

At Gheringhap the sun came out, the train stopped at the down end for a moment:

At North Geelong it got held for an up pass, through North Shore at 0905:

Supposedly this timetable applies until the end of May, every Wednesday and Friday. Smile

9140/41 usually have 20 container flats but I do not know the details of the inwards and outwards loadings.

There is a bit more in the posts after that as well, supposedly it sometimes gets up to 30 wagons. Does anyone know if cement still goes up to Mildura? Both of the trains I have photographed have had no hoppers attached, just containers, both 40 and 60 foot wagons used.

When I videoed 9140 through Bacchus Marsh around 4am in the mornin g of the Monday following the airshow weekend, I recall it had a cement pot on the rear. Couldn't say if it only had one or others with it though; I'll find the video I took sometime and have a look.

I was quite suprised to see it!

Marcus, in your album of Mildura Freight you have several shots of trains passing new concrete sleepers. Can you tell me what lines these are on, what upgrades are happening and whether they are BG or SG sleepers?

The photos from April 10, 2009 have concrete sleepers lying beside thee track. That was the Melbourne-Ballarat line, when the Regional Fast Rail project upgraded the track concrete sleepers were only laid on the higher speed sections.

In 2008 the Geelong line had the last of the wooden sleepers removed, since the start of 2009 they have moved onto the Ballarat line. They are low-profile 'partial replacement' rather than normal and heavy full sized ones. They are broad gauge only, I assume the replacement is to reduce the need for track maintenance. Why they didn't do it as part of the original upgrade I don't know, it costs more to replace each sleeper one by one.

So far they seem to have completed the section of track around Deer Park to Melton or so, sleepers have been dumped lineside coming out of Bacchus Marsh and up at Bank Box, with stockpiles delivered by road there as well.

I'm pretty sure I saw the Mildura train on Monday night coming home from HBMRC's show (around 6:30PM)? Not sure which way it was heading, because I was on the Deer Park Bypass at 100ks, hoping to beat it back to Melton, but I think it must've been heading back to Melbourne?

Looking at the Gheringhap Loop website the train seems to be still running each Wednesday and Friday morning, sometimes 30 minutes to 1 hour late. I went out last week and it was one of the few times it didn't run!

I went out this morning to see the freight, G525 and X39 were the locos on a train just made up of containers. The clouds would $##% off which was a pain.... Evil or Very Mad

Great photos, Marcus!

I went out today to catch it, ran through Manor at 0942.  Unfortunately, the weather wasn't as good as Marcus had.  G525 and A85 were again at the head.

If you look at the video on my sig - it looks like a Mildura freight - can someone confirm that?

Thanks Bruce.

A mate of mine over in Linfox Linehaul (late FCL) wanted to get a container from Tennant Creek to Mildura.  No-one at Pac Nat intermodal could tell him that they could get a 20'er up there (albeit on broad gauge). Now I can tell him this info for next time!

The box ended up going road Adelaide to Mildura.

Was the plan to rail the container all the way from Tennant Creek to Mildura ?

Adelaide to Mildura railed via Dynon that would end up being about 1450 km's compared to about 390 km's via road along the Sturt Highway.  Rolling Eyes
