This coming Friday (The 18th of June) is the A.R.E. train watchers night for Winter 2010.


There is a BBQ done on the platform, and the old Signal box has a log fire roaring, so it will be very nice.

They are known to get around 30 of the ARE members.

#1, Do I need to be an A.R.E. member.  Normally yes, and is free for A.R.E. members.  BUT, it is free for first timers to come and sample the event.

It is not too late to become an ARE member for the night, just pop into the ARE RailFan shop in the city (corner Flinders Lane and Market St), get your membership there on your way through to Tallarook on the Friday.

#2, Are there special trains or lashups?  None are ever Sheduled. BUT, most nights something interesting always happens.

One night we had 4x S class on one BG freight when that normally never happens, we had Kerang disaster locomotive on a local Seymor train, only weeks after the Kerang disaster.

So you may say that, the rail operators do know about Tallarook train watchers nights, and, they just may do things just to show off for us on this night.

Judging by the opinions of most train crews I know, they might just show off by rolling their eyes and laughing at the gunzels.

You mean no rail crews showed off for the assembled multitudes? I was hoping for some drivers doing handstands or maybe driving while riding a unicycle around the cab. Maybe playing a concerto on the whistle while jugging chainsaws and kittens.

Oh well, perhaps they'll show off next time.

I've been told a 3rd hand story of a well known railfan out lineside in the mid 1990s for the last broad gauge broad gauge superfreighter headed up Ingliston Bank in Victoria. Word was given to the crew at South Dynon that he was out at a particular spot, so they would be ready for him. The train comes along, he gets the shot, goes home, gets the photo processed, and says "wow - that's a great shot". He gets the photo enlarged to poster size, and shows it to a mate, who points at the cab and says "did you notice that" - the bare backsides of the driver and fireman pressed up against the windscreen.  (The photo now hangs in a pub owned by a former PN driver.)
