Toolamba - Echuca line reopening

    Location: South West Vic
    A79 with A79 at the tail left Shepparton about 15.15 today. At 16.00 they were at Mooroopna, with A79 collecting the containers from the Patricks yard. I guess they'll head up to Echuca and down through Bendigo later tonight.

    Saw it come through at Echuca Racecourse at about 7:30ish... had a A79 on the front and back. Going quite slow.. 20km/h I'd reckon..
    Had a few containers on it with a few for more containers..

    Can anyone advise when the next train could be coming through the line? I would like to get some video footage of it..

    It came through Bendigo Station at 2146 with A73 leading the double header with A79.  It stopped in the Kangaroo Flat loop and departed for the slog up Big Hill at 2200.  Quite a lot of the containers are refrigerated.

    Sorry I mean't a A73... Indeed there were alot refrigerated containers on there, but a closer inspection, none of them were running I think because the fans weren't spinning.

    I believe most of the Victorian intrastate freight container freights only carry empty containers on the down trip (from the Port of Melbourne to Warrnambool / Mildura / Tocumwal) then take the containers loaded with exports back to the port.

    I think some refrigerated containers are just used to keep the contents insulated from the outside, not actually cold?

    Well spotted but reefers don't necessarily need fans running to maintain the contents at the required temp.

    (I sent a container of frozen beef to Perth once from Sydney with no power and it was still frozen at the other end....not intentionally though!)

    Edit: If it's fruit, it would run at something above +3C. They may hook it up to ship's power once loaded on board at the port to keep it at a constant temp.

    Arrived Bendigo station at 2233 departed 2236. Some of the containers had there fans operating.

    Had A 71 running push pull with G573? (could be wrong) A leading into Echuca where G ran around and led to Bendigo.

    I think it'd nearly be worthwhile stationing a small loco (like a T or P) up at Echuca during the diversions so the down trains could pull up in Echuca, the T/P plonks on the other end to lead to Toolamba, then the train locos continue to Tocumwal, and when returning on the up, the train pulls up in Toolamba, the T/P is attatched and then pilots the train back to Echuca. This would save a fair bit of time wouldn't it, or am I missing something (like does this involve common sense)?

    It would require having a secure compound in which to safely store the locomotive (depending on whether you want to risk it being vandalised or not), as well as a road tanker driving up to it every few days for refuelling.

    There is a compound there that they stable the Sprinters in not sure if it is 2 roads thou?
    Is there a fueling point there on the down side of the station?

    They have a 1 track compound at Echuca, where they store the VLocity overnight for its trip back up to Bendigo. Only cleaning & washing facilities  there, no refueling I believe..

    does anyone know of as roughed timetable of when the train from Tocumwal passes through Toolamba, Echuca and Bendigo?

    is it a daily occurence?
    or does it take one trip to get from tocumwal to melbourne on one day and then come back the next night, similair to the Merbein freight

    I wonder if Pacific National would be nice enough to give you the times if you called them. They are usually quite friendly and you never know you're luck!

    Guess it was late. At 16:50 I drove from Tatura to Toolamba expecting to see it somewhere, but no sign....

    Anybody know the down times?

    The freights from Toc cross New Dookie Rd at around the 4:30pm mark when running, give or take around 15 mins, only noticed it once past 5pm. These times still seem consistent.
