Southern Rail have some good and bad news. Bad news is a delay with the remaining u-boat shipment, anyone who planned on picking up their u-boats at Caulfield should read the full update. Good news is "SR will have a major announcement at the show & maybe two with a bit of luck." We know the Tulloch tank cars are going ahead so that means there must be two new items to start saving for. Wohoo Very Happy (Wohoo based on my delight of the u-boats I recently received. Mighty fine models)

I wonder if it's Victorian prototype?????? I spoke to them at HB and they were very coy about their new project, maybe even mentioning that it would be based on something south of the border. Harris cars anybody?

A few years ago, I'd have doubted that anyone would do the H cars because both Railmotor Models and Auscision Models have said they would. But in today's world that rule no longer applies.

I had a talk to SR and picked up the latest order forms.

2nd run of the u-boats: a number of special livery / name board models will be available @ $719 per 4 car set ("gosford electofication", and a set with various nameboards) along with various other versions,  and a "FISH" set with neon signs front and rear @ $759. Also powered 2 car sets at $399 and non powered at $335. Very few of the first run sets are still available, still at $679.

New stuff - VR and SA tank cars announced, based on the NSW tulloch designs as running in the late 70's (SA) and 90's (Vic). Two worth noting are wagon "ATSF 4534" that was running in SA in the 90's, and two single Vic wagons that will be decorated with graffiti! Prices similar to the previously announced NSW wagons ($63 & $68 for singles depending on livery, $189 for 3 packs).

December news updates here.

Covers Uboat reruns, new/updated details for the Xplorer & Vlocity projects, tank car pack updates. And the 10% earlybird discount details.

And for those who like to complain about the ever increasing cost of models you might want to have a read of the newspaper article from the China Daily.

Edit: note there are 2 types of earlybird discounts, Vlocity/Xplorer as before, and a new one has been offered for 2nd run uboats and applies even if you've already ordered your set. Just make sure you pay the balance by 31/3/12 as noted in the update.

From what I can gather from my China watch, & aspects of things that happened in the past is that these wage rises are going to be an annual event.

In the past, many of the better companies would pay bonuses & reimburse return rail fares to their workers who came back after the annual New Year holiday.  I understand that still goes on & is something to encourage the better & experienced workers back, cheaper & better long term productivity is gained in that way, as new starters have to be trained & it takes time for that especially in getting it right.

So expect the rises from all of the importers.

While I have to commend Southern for their so far great after sales service & customer PR with the early issues. Also the new models they have announced, one thing that concerns me is the once again duplication of models that Southern is showing in their program.

Not sure about the Velocity & Explorer sets, but the Urbans & RTC's including the Vic & SA variants had also been announced by SDS. It would be really great if somehow this duplication did not happen, as I think there are many other models that can still be produced for various era's that are not cutting across what others are producing.

I know Southern had announced the RTC's first but when one looks at the time factor, it would certainly suggest that SDS had them planned prior to that & well into production.

I certainly hope neither of them get burnt in this, as from what has come from both of them so far, they are very much worthy new dealers in the hobby/

Last year the wage rise was 20%.  This year it's 15%  Expect next year to be in the 12-14% range.

Now that they're making everything for everyone, and most of the rest of the world is in the economic outhouse and can't afford to re-equip,  the Chinese can afford to ramp up the wages of the workers quite a bit.

I'd love to be able to afford to buy a 'The Fish' set for The Girls dad.  He used to catch it every day when he was working in the Sydney CBD when he was a younger man.

Before I forget, if anyone has good side view pics of the other Vlocity advertising logo's not already being done by Southern Rail can you let Rob at Southern Rail know. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be interested in them on an rtr model. The extra logo's that I'm aware of are "Soverign Hill", "white wedding dress", "Castlemaine State festival", "returning services to Maryborough" & "Melbourne zoo". ("Melb Aquarium Octopus" & "100th vlocity" already being done)

No promises these special logo's can/will be done, but a few good pics would help the decision making.

edit: 3 more discovered - "sharks of shipwreck cove", "grace kelly" & "national gallery Victoria".

Good news. Apologies to the QR modeller in that I appriciate the 16.5 mm gauge units so I can have someQR on my mainly Victorian based layout witout making another layout.

I will have to buy a twin pack I think.  I hope the tooling lend itself to do some of the earlier classes eventually, in QR blue !

Interesting little race running with SDS and Southern Models the competitors.  Possibly could count in Eureka, but he is doing slightly different rail tank cars (RTCs).  Not that he has told us what it is he is producing in any detail.

I did have my money on SDS, but now it is looking close as they come down the straight.  Razz

As for having money on, think I have ordered samples from each.

This project is being undertaken from a new factory making Australian prototype exclusively for Southern Rail. The development time has been four months so we are on track for release at the Liverpool Exhibition and are very pleased at the service we are receiving and the innovation from the factory.
"Southern Rail Models"

I found this statement quite interesting.  How many model factories are there in China now?  A fair few, methinks.

Southern Rail will be attending the Epping, Caulfield & Newcastle exhibitions in the coming months.

We hope to have the test shots of a previously unannounced model on display at Epping.
"Southern Rail Models"

A wagon or a locomotive, I wonder?

Selfishly, I kind of hope it's not another double-up.  Whilst I'm very happy with Southern Rail's U-boats, and I'm looking forward to their 2300's and so on, they have done a few duplicate models (not necessarily their fault of course).  Out of their six projects announced/delivered so far, three have also been announced by other producers;

U-boats : Minimodels (still a long way away, no pre-production models sighted although perhaps due soon?)
Tulluch tank wagons: SDS models (as above, neck and neck, which will arrive first?)
Countrylink Explorer: Powerline

Non duplicate projects:
V/Locity
2300 class
VAK/VGK wagons

There is a rumour (from another forum) more than one producer is preparing to do the VR 'J' series hoppers that Auscision have recently announced (already done by Railmotor Models).  If true, I'm hoping Southern Rail isn't one of them...

Many many thousands. Most of them don't make trains, instead make models of cars, ships, planes, McDonald 'happy meal' toys, etc. From a manufacturers perspective there's a lot more quick money to be made in cheap/simple toys rather than accurate highly detailed models.

Southern Rail isn't the only 'new guy' investigating new manufacturers,  some very nice models will be coming from others soon (eg SDS milk tankers - speaking of which new samples have arrived and look even better than the ones I posted a pic of in the Hobsons Bay thread.)

And yet another update yesterday.
Southern Rail, having made no updates in the first four months of the year, have made up for it by making three blog/news updates in the last three weeks!

http://www.southernrailmodels.com.au/article/20th-may-2012-ntaf-update

This makes it look as though SDS will now win the tank wagon race.  Their wagons are now in production and are expected to arrive next month (I know this because I emailed & asked).  Incidentally SDS are hoping to update their website this week.

Toby

I hope they do - but this is what they told me a month ago in answer to an email enquiry of my own - "later this week".
