I have been told this wednesday (12th October 2011) there will be a movement of wagons from the branch between Maryborough and Ararat.

The wagons are to be moved from Ararat to Geelong (Corio) and stabled in the SG sidings.

Brian

GOOD.  Great in fact.

So what is the reason for this?  Is it
1) so that the wagons can be used to move the harvest, or
2) so that the Ararat to Maryborough line can be cleared to re-open it to services or
3) both 1 and 2?

I'd say 2 moreso than 1.

Does anybody know for sure if PN still own the wagons?

The wagons will be going north.

The line will be reopened.  The wagons will be put to good use.

Dunolly Grain storage will be reopened for this years harvest.  So we will see trains running out of Dunolly on SG.

I have also heard that Vline have purchased some wagons but this has not been verified.

Looks like Ararat will get some extra traffic.

There were trains along there in the 2000's under FA, but the line would probably need a large refurbishment (not just a few sleepers replaced here and there) to make it fit for traffic.

Not realy all they need to do is replace every fourth sleeper.....called being safe tied then replace others as required.

Yeah mate, though if they are smart they will run them backwards and fowards a few times to loosen up the grease.

I'm not too sure, as it's been a while since I've been out that way; but there possibly could be some flood damaged areas as well.

Back in the days we had a rule to grease all the boxes that had not run for > 200 days before they were allowed to move. Don't know what 'they' (whoever 'they' are) do now.

i went down there about 2 months ago to have a look and have driven from ararat to scaryborough a few times now and the line is in a pretty bad state but in saying that nothing a weedex train couldnt clear for the most part and for the wagons, if you can get past the plague of spiders to examine the wagons you will be doing good!!

This is what it looked like just past the junction at Ararat as of about two weeks ago:

That line needs more than weedkiller, more like chainsaws, hedgetrimmers, and brushcutters!

After a phone call this morning, here is an update.

A track gang has already been out on site. Every 4th sleeper will be replaced starting shortly.    This will provide access to the line.

The the movement has been put back until a team can work on the wagon boxes (this is the main source of the delay) and the track work is completed.

When you say every 4th sleeper, is this between the wagons and Ararat?

Not sure at this stage James.  I will see what I can find out.  I am told it will be a Geelong crew who will collect the wagons.

The train crew is not holding up the process.  It is the examiners and track I am advised.

I believe a PN train will collect stored hoppers off the line as early as tomorrow Thurs 27th Oct...with potentially another collection train later....wagons to be serviced in Ararat Yard. 8)
