Thanks Gman - stand by while I come up with a question...

OK, here we go. Let's start wide open before we narrow things down...

The station we seek is, or was, a crossing station.

Melton?

What does that mean? Pardon my ignorance, using it as a search term in google leads to level crossings and 'hoppers crossing station' rather than anything useful

I think you will find it means a station on a single track line where there is a crossing loop for trains to cross one another.

Is it Talbot?
  duttonbay Minister for Railways

It is not Talbot or Melton.

A crossing station is indeed a station on a single track line where trains travelling in one direction meet (cross) trains in the opposite direction.  Sorry for using railway terminology.

Let's add another clue:
The station we seek is, or was, a crossing station.
The station is, or was, fully interlocked.

None of Wangaratta, Little River or Ballan

The station we seek is, or was, a crossing station.
The station is, or was, fully interlocked.

There was a turntable at the other end of the staff sections in both directions

Not Irrewarra.

I will give another clue - this has been going on for a little while.

The station we seek is, or was, a crossing station.
The station is, or was, fully interlocked.
There was a turntable at the other end of the staff sections in both directions

The staff sections were Train Staff & Ticket

Rennie? (with turntables at Yarrawonga and Oakland).

I was wondering whether there were any other staff sections with turntables at either end (I guess Muckleford might qualify these days, if it is a staff station).  But Rennie was never interlocked.
  duttonbay Minister for Railways

OK. This has gone on too long, I reckon. I shall add a clue after each incorrect answer from now (well, after I notice there is an answer - I don't get notifications)

The station is, or was, fully interlocked.

The line is closed

An intriguing clue.

As a wild, wild guess I'll say Anderson.

Faredodger
And an intriguing answer. Anderson is correct.

A fully interlocked station (in the 1960s) sitting between Nyora and State Mine (both with turntables).

I was intrigued by the question of why a line that only had staff and ticket safeworking would have a fully interlocked station that wasn't a terminus.  It seemed an unlikely combination unless one speculated that there had been a fairly significant reduction in traffic and importance.  So I was drawn to the Wonthaggi line, once one of the state's most important lines, and owing to the phasing out of steam, reduced to being just another rural branch.

New teaser:

I am a piece of railway infrastructure on a closed line.

Although it has been a number of decades since I was last used by a train, I continued to be of use, down the years, to other traffic in precisely the same way.
  duttonbay Minister for Railways

Hmm, "precisely the same way" needs a bit of thought. But I will kick off with the Kilcunda trestle, now being used by pedestrians and cyclists.
