I wanted to start this thread as there is no observation thread on the Sydney Forum.

I'll start with:
5 car S set through Redfern at 11am today.
This was made up of S4 with an untargeted power car leading.

Also 4892 was leading a single XPT car through Hurlstone Park not long before this.

These sorts of things can always go into the Sightings Forum, which would perhaps be a better place for it?

Your S Set movement would likely be an exchange cars movement between depots, transferring a dead power car.

Your XPT movement is a regular move between Meeks Rd and Chullora/Flemington. The cars/locos go to Chullora for overhaul works, while they go to FMC to use the wheel lathe.

I couldn't tell you to be honest. I've only ever seen the trailer cars at FMC, never the locos. Perhaps it's bad timing on my part, or perhaps the locos are indeed using the one at DELEC still.

An S set move on Monday involved a power car attached to a four car set being taken around the city circle from Mortdale to change the direction it was facing.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on target plates these days! Some trains are missing them altogether while others are displaying two at the same time... bit of a mess.

I've noticed alot of drivers aren't using the destination boards on the older sets either correctly or they just leave them turned off.
Is this common practise with drivers or are the boards faulty.

Some of the incorrect destinations have been an S set on the North Shore line displaying East Hills on a Penrith service.

Others have been things like on outbound city circle services still display city instead of the outer terminus.

I know that other operators (MTM) (QR) have a fleet that has a 100% fleet that uses the boards correctly, yet Cityrail seems incapable of doing this.

Apparently they is hard to program and set, just as it is hard when the train does not do it automatically on the Millennium and OSCAR trains.

Good to see another sarcastic response from someone who has no clue.

To answer the user above the know it all, on S sets if you are using a version 13 unit but given code 12 instruction/ codes, then you get the wrong result showing ( so a code 9 for Bondi might be a Campbelltown instead)

Rather then confuse the masses or waste half a shift trying to code it correctly, it is better to turn the unit off. I would always tell my guard so it was very clear via announcement where we were going.

On M and H sets, the program is done by computers and based on your run. If your run number changes and the computer program doesn't match, it is very difficult to set as train crew don't have access by rights to change it.

Thanks for that response seb3251, would there be any use in fixing how they are set (eg uniform codes or upgrade of boards) or would this be something that would require too much $$$.

First of all, it was not a sarcastic response but a more casual response as it has been answered to many times before. I believe the search function is there to be used. I thought the information can be modified through the touch screens in the M and H Sets, but it would be a quite a hassle to set everything everytime the train begins its journey.

Hi guys, 1st post.

Hope this is the right place to put it.

I noticed what appears to be an abandoned staircase on the left side of the tunnel between erskineville and redfern(Not the ESR). I sometimes catch the countrylink from macarthur, and it goes via that tunnel to cross the tracks to go to the CL platforms at central. Anyone know anything about this staircase?

To the last two posters,
1st post, as you pass through the illawarra dive, the stairs you see are parts of an underpass that links the old carriage workshops on the north-side to the main eveleigh workshops on the south-side from back in the day.
To the second post, if you are leaving plat 1 at Redfern the tunnel that you see on your left is called the engine dive and gives access to sydney yard from eveleigh yard and is very much in use.

Is it normal for a train to be so close behind another train on a platform? Taken at Campbelltown at about 7:20am.

Spotted an S set with red target plate on a Glenfield service, but the driver had "Bondi Junction" on the desto board.

I'm guessing this driver had the wrong codes for this particular set?
