Weren't these units lurking ovenight/stored in Platform 1 at Rockdale last week.
I thought I caught glimpses of 1202 and 1204 on separate days last week.
Unusual place to keep them

Should have been 1201 and 1202. They were stabled there as they were going o/night signal testing on the Illawarra and East Hills lines.

I thought that Platform 1 at Rockdale was a little unusual, (and more exciting than a track machine for that location) so that explanation makes sense.
Forgive me for pressing the point, but I am sure that it was over a couple of nights during the week, and one of the numbers I caught a glimpse of was (I am sure) was 1204 on my first glimpse coming through Rockdale and when I looked a gain a day or so later, saw the number 1202. If 1204 was elsewhere then so be it...but I am just making sure I didn't make it up.

Considering 1204 is still in the USA, I'd suggest it might have been the font on 1201? I can't offer any other explanation, except that 1201 and 1202 are the only locos in the country.

Just for the record, 1201/1202 are now at Islington Works in South Australia.

Reportedly on long term lease for working the Balco train.

Who are they owned by now that Elzorro is not around anymore?

P2017

I think they have always been owned by the manufacturer, NREC.

I'm not sure that they ever were formally leased to El Zorro, not that it matters.

They are owned by NREC.  El Zorro never took posession.

Does/will the Balco still have the CM's working on it, or will they be swapped out with these other locomotives?

Probably a continuation of a stupid question, but does the Balco only ever run the 1 set of flats to Adelaide?

Thanks Smile

The CM's left Adelaide bound for Goulburn on the 29th of November and is currently running with GL108.
There is only one rake of flats used for the Balco

The story I have heard is that they were well liked, much more than GL108, but the Gensets will be cheaper.

The CM are owned CFCLA

CFCLA are a JV between Sasser Family Holdings, Inc. of the USA and Marubeni Corporation of Japan, The JV probably has a floorplan to finance their fleet of new build locos, be assured that they did not pay cash for them, they are not fools

The CM have a CIF Australia price of around $3.5 mil

The CFCLA JV is in business to generate profits, the lease of new locos is not cheap, CFCLA need to generate sufficient return to pay their financiers, then make sufficient margin to run their business, and pay their two shareholders a dividend

1201/1202 are owned by the builder, probably on NREC Australia's books at close to actual cost, NREC should always be able to cut price to beat CFCLA's rate, and still maintain a profit. I would think that NREC's cost for these gensets is probably a million less than a CM

Not to mention that even at the gross rating the 1200 class are good for 2400 HP, say 2100 HP into the generator.
The CM are 3300HP gross, 3000HP into the generator.

So you would expect to pay more for a CM than a 1200.

If the 1200 can do the job, and could be expected to save a lot of fuel by idling only a single engine while waiting, they might be a good deal.

Not going to get a better picture of it again IMO
and I suspect that's one of the DB ICE liveried F59ACs in the corner of the picture so looks like they dumped 1203 into 'rotten row' until they figure out what to do with it

I think sold is a strong word to use right now.

I would not be surprised if there was trial being undertaken by SCT using these locos, as the first step towards a possible sale in the near future however.
