Hi all,

The train will run as R707 R761 with 14 cars.

The train will run Push-Pull to Deer Park via the freight lines at Brooklyn to get around the different closures of the day.

It is going to be one of the largest tours of the year with over 550 people scheduled on board.

The consist as noted below is:

R761 – R707 – 61 BW – 63 BW – 17 BE – 25 BE – 38 BE – 46 BE – 212 BS – 9 BRS – Moorabool – 14 BRS – 8 AS – 11 AS – 708BK – PCP 292

For those wondering, 61BW will be the trailing car out of Melbourne.

No. of Cars = 14

Weight: Over 600 T

It is also noted that due to the length of this train, some carriages will remain off the platform at most stations. Passengers are asked to board at the nearest carriage on the platform and then walk through.

There will be 2 Kiosks and 1 Club Car in operation during this Tour.

No, but best guess some steel cars and some wooden 6 wheel stock.

Of note, to the car-caders on the highway between Warragul and Moe.... STAY TO THE BLOODY LEFT if you're gonna do 80km/h and dribble over the chuffer.

I'll be in Victoria from Saturday for a few days too visit my brother and sister in law.
I plan on getting out and about to check out the Snow Train and get some photos and video footage.
I have photos of R761 and R766 with SAR locos 520 and 621 from visits to SA in 1987, 1991 and 1994 but have never photographed/videoed an R class in Victoria.
If the Snow Train is to be double headed, does anybody know if it will be double head steam, would love to see R711, or steam/diesel?
Many thanks.

Probably R761 & R711 double heading.  And given that low-level snow is possible on Sunday, it might literally become "The Snow Train".

Big thanks to 707 Operations for the hiring of R707, 212 BS (WCR livery) and 708 BK (for a private charter). Some rough times for Sunday later in the week.

I urge anyone who has though about going on the rail only segment of this train to call 03 9397 1953 or email booking@steamrail.com.au to confirm you place.

It is a fantastic price to ride behind two amazing R Class locos on a very long train (14 cars)

An additional carriage has been added to the train to accommodate us late booking people.

See you on the train

Just wondering how easily it would be to add an additional car onto the train?
What's missing from the above consist is a viewing car like 14CW or 18CE upfront.

With such amazing public exposure this tour is getting from both Rail Fans and the general public it would be worth the effort to have one of these cars attached for mums and dads to get the kids up close to the locos as well as those taking their first tour.

As 292PCP is behind the private car, I doubt there will be public access.

It's great exposure and sure to seal the deal of many to take further trips with Steamrail.

Are you going to pay for said vehicle to be added to the consist?
And, are you whiling to push the train there and back, considering it is already 14 cars in total...
The wooden stock have opening windows, I think that will be enough to whet people's appetite!

Oh I agree with all your mentioned factors.

Other states often run heritage tours of 14 cars plus, I have been on 2 that were 18 and 1 at 19.  I was recently on a heritage tour in the USA that was 32 cars.

We here in Victoria often struggle with the notion of large heritage consists.

14 cars is well within the scope of the 2 R class on this route proven by a single R and 8 cars on the Snow Train last month.

I'm just of the opinion that you give the most rounded experience that you can to the public and they ill return over and over supporting our much loved heritage trains.

Just a Simple observation.

It is a great testament to Steamrail to have such a popular Tour, it was not all that long ago that the Snow Train would run with 6 cars!

I live for the day when the Snow Train is 20 cars and three R's. Very Happy

I'd die a very happy man!
That and seeing steam return to South Gippsland....but that's another story!

I understand exactly where you are coming from, but think about one tiny factor.
The load might be enough for the R's to add an extra carriage, but what if one of the R classes is not at its peak performance. Both sets of crews for the day are more than capable of getting the maximum out of the locos, but if one of the R classes lacks performance it's then up to the second R to take the strain.
I look forward to seeing the pics and I hope everyone travelling enjoys themselves!

Just wondering if there was anywhere I could access a train notice? I'm coming down from Qld to go in the train.

Bear in mind another car may make it too long to run around.
And remember specials have to fit in around Normal service Trains.

I think the yard at Traralgon is quite capable of handling a lengthy train like this.

Do we have any circular times?

Also I've noticed RRL works on around Footscray affecting the Williamstown and Werribee lines. Will Steamrail be forced to head out west to turn it, or are they already in the city say at Dynon, which they have done before.

The train is leaving Newport around 7am running via the freight lines then to Deer Park in push pull mode.
Following the run around of one of the R's the train will make its way back into town via the suburban lines to Southern Cross.

The weather looks to be freezing cold tomorrow so hopefully the snow fields will have an amazing fresh covering overnight, its been reported that snow will fall to 600m in some locations, as a previous poster has already stated, we may really become "The Snow Train"

Different media have already reported on the Snow Train with more to be out and about at Southern Cross, Id expect a large public appearance line side tomorrow.

There has been plenty of blatant plugs on radio all week.
GOLD 104 was giving away tickets during the week too.

Good to see something to this scale happen!

It would be nice to see Promotions of that level take place in N.S.W - I am unsure if it does

Finally departed Southern Cross at 10:21am for Traralgon. It's been a tough morning for Steamrail!

It departed Dandenong just over  2 hours late at 1120hrs.  Not Steamrail's fault, however some not happy passengers in the cold.  Hope the rest of the day goes well.

I read on TDU on Facebook, That they got Track Blocked twice at Newport
