DVA software

Also I would like to suggest the idea of having the ability to sync our own generated DVA announcements on this software with the indicator board rather than the generic one, that way it can be customized for more realism.

Interesting thought... I'd never thought of it. I'd like to see this too, but I'm not in any hurry for it.

New version out, hopefully it fixes the playback and export issues. I've tested it on both Mac and Windows and works pretty well for me. Also some improvements to the indicators. The request to be able to use custom audio files for announcements is noted, and will probably be in a future version. As for realtime data, I had a look at the trip view data and its pretty hard to make sense of without documentation. Not saying it'll never happen, but probably not for a while.

Lachlan: Mac or Windows? If windows, did you maybe install it to a different location from the default? Can you try completely uninstalling it then install the newest version manually?

With the indicators can you make the time tick over at :40 as this is what the real indicators do.

New version 5.2.4 out hopefully fixes the update (taking effect from versions after 5.2.4) and playback issues some were running into.

  • Added: Automatic substitution where there are small differences between the timetable and the voice library, that was causing certain automatically-generated announcements to not play. Examples: 'Domestic' vs 'Domestic Airport' vs 'Domestic Terminal', 'Kembla Grange' vs 'Kembla Grange Racecourse'.

  • Added: Custom announcements can be used with the indicators instead of the auto-generated ones.

  • Added: Added Sydney Terminal country platforms style of announcements.

  • Updated: Improved reliability of the automatic update mechanism.

  • Updated: Per user suggestion for realism, 'due out' decrements and trains change over at the 40 second mark each minute.

  • Fixed: Improved scrolling appearance. The scrolling speed is more realistic, and the rounding logic applied to text positioning in the scrolling list has been updated to remove the ugly 'wriggling'/'bumping' effect '.

  • Fixed: Bugs exporting files and playing large sound files.

  • Fixed: Misnamed Sydney-Male 'Coalcliff' sound'.

Synthesizing Grant Goldman's or Taylor Owen's voice from individual syllables rather than the current words would be difficult, if not impossible, and would sound unrealistic. The easiest way is to construct any words not available out of the existing announcements. This is easy to do with any reasonable good sound editor (I use Audacity) and if you have any particular requests for words and phrases I could have a go at making them.

I do not have the on-train DVA sounds (besides the limited number of recorded Millennium ones provided to me). If anyone is able to provide me with recordings or even better the original sound files, I can add them. An on-train indicator display is definitely possible, just needs a realistic looking LED display style font.

For stations that have or had not been opened, it's possible to cut together sounds to make some of them. The Sydney-Female DVA has ECRL stations already, and I've just prepared ones for Sydney-Male that will be in the next version (e.g. Macquarie Fields + Wiley Park = Macquarie Park, North Strathfield + West Ryde = North Ryde). The others would require actual recordings.

New version out (5.2.6):
  • Added: Manually play next train announcement on Indicators page.
  • Added: For added realism, auto-generated announcements now have "X via Y" and "all stations to Z" phrasing. Additional stations can be configured by editing the text files 'vias.txt' and 'allStationsTos.txt' in the application folder.
  • Added: Moved substitution list into a separate text file. Additional substitutions can be configured by editing the text file 'substitutions.txt' in the application folder.
  • Added: Sydney DVA sound for Shellharbour Junction.
  • Updated: More responsive performance when previewing sounds.
  • Updated: Busy indication when preparing an announcement to play takes a long time.
  • Fixed: Misnamed Sydney 'Turrella', 'Victoria Street' and 'High Street' sounds.

Hi,

Nice work on the program.

Just noticed a little problem, the auto-generated announcments seem to always say "The train on platform" instead of "the next train to arrive on platform"

Is there a way to have this fixed?

Thanks,
Nathan.

Im very impressed by the program, however I just have a couple of minor issues.
In manual mode the platform indicators, particularly the CityRail V1 indicator does not seem to scroll.
Also the scrolling seems to be rather slow, or it may just be my computer, im not sure.

has anyone the Leppington and Edmondson Park DVA sounds?
I have a tacky recording but someone probably has something better.

just FYI i've already made a recording here but the background noise is for real.
a quiet evening recording would be much better.

Nice catch! It used to do "the next train to arrive on platform" for >0 minutes to departure, and "the train on platform" at 0 minutes. Not sure when I broke this but I've fixed it again for the next version.

I just tried this and saw the problem you describe. It normally should not scroll when all the stations can fit on the screen, but adding one or two more it still does not scroll until adding several more. I'll have this fixed for the next version. Re: the slow performance, I'm doing a bit of work on the rendering code to hopefully try and improve this but it's already optimised pretty heavily. What kind of machine are you running it on?

Awesome Very Happy I ran it through Audacity's "noise reduction" and it sounds pretty decent (even if the noise reduction does distort it very slightly). Added them to the next version, but if anyone can get a better recording (for these or for Shellharbour Junction) I'll have a listen.

G'Day,

Love your work, great job. I have noticed a few small bugs, Taylor Owens, when she says "High Street" it is spaced out, it's fine with Grant Goldman's voice

Grafton and Casino after each other come out as GraftonCasino

and one little question: will the original scrolling LEDs platform stopping pattern displays ever make an appearance in the software?

This is due to there being 3 sounds "High St", "high" and "street". It is using the last two instead of the first one. This is because the first one's name doesn't match the timetable. I'll rename it to "High Street" in the next version so that it does.

5.2.7 released:
  • Added: Sydney DVA sounds for SWRL stations.
  • Added: Validation of the stations lists on the Indicators page, similar to that which already takes place on the DVA page.
  • Added: Menu items to edit configuration files for the Indicators.
  • Updated: DVA will now install and use a 64-bit Java Runtime Environment on 64-bit Windows.
  • Updated: Further optimised the Indicator rendering code.
  • Fixed: 'The next train to arrive on platform' once again is played in generated announcements when minutes to departure > 0.
  • Fixed: Incorrect scrolling or fixed station list when the number of stations is close to just fitting on the screen.
  • Fixed: Misnamed Sydney 'High Street' and 'Coalcliff' sounds.

Surely there's a better way of rolling out updates than installing the whole thing again? Razz

Jonathan, if you had a font, do you think it would be worthwhile to make Millennium/Waratah internal display simulators (that play DVA sounds)?
