RRL Opening Timetable - April 2015

    What we know so far , being slowly drip fed out by Government to gain maximum "brownie points" before State Election late November .

    - Some months ago 5 extra am peak trips & 5 extra PM Peak trips announced. (Geelong x 3, Ballarat x 1, Bendigo x 1 each Peak.)
    See note below re the deck chairs have shifted already on this announcement !!

    - 14/08/14 Geelong from April 2015 on RRL opening gets 1 extra am Up Peak, 1 extra PM Down Peak. (2 extra Peak) Weekday Off Peak between 0900 - 1500 goes from hourly to every 20 minutes (24 extra Off Peak) . Then 2 extra am Up Peak & 2 extra PM Down Peak Geelong when all 43 VL cars are delivered (whenever that is at best late 2015) . Waurn Ponds station will open late 2014  ( just in time for the Marginal Seat Express to arrive !!)

    (14/08/14 Labor also announced 20 minute Geelong Off peak frequency (as 22 extra trips) if elected. No mention of Peak frequencies.)  Napthine & Andrews both in Geelong on same day to announce same issue enter into a media slanging match .

    Neither Government or Labor declared hand as yet on late night or Weekend frequencies . Surely these would have to move up to every 30 - 40 minutes if Weekdays are to go to 20 minutes.

    With VLP finally separated from Metro and the opening RRL timetable also offers a golden opportunity to introduce a common VLP timetable for both Saturdays and Sundays for the South Western, Western, Northern and North Eastern districts . Having different timetables for Saturdays and Sundays is crazy these days, and confusing to the punters .

    No new services for Seymour or Traralgon? I was under the impression that the 5 new peak services would mean 1 for each commuter line.

    Only 2 extra Peak services when RRL opens and  only when all 43 extra VL cars are delivered are the announced full 10 extra  each weekday to run . :

    Geelong  3 am Up &  3  PM Down  Ballarat & Bendigo  1 am Up & 1 PM Down extra each equals 10 new peak trips each Weeday .

    First VL car due according to "smoke signals"  in October 14, so even if Bomardier turn out 1 car a week we are not going to have all the cars till late 2015. So all extra 10 peak trips will be quite a time in coming .  

    However announced 14/08/14 in Geelong that 1 extra Up am & 1 extra Down PM Peak each Weekday from when RRL opens in 04/15 then other trips to follow when all 43 cars delivered .

    The delayed rollingstock deliveries are really a stuff up in that whilst Mulder was busy blaming Labor for not ordering new trains, the rails being too short  for RRL and that the phase of the moon was wrong, he then sat on his hands for all of 2011 before ordering 40 (subsequently increased to 43 )cars. So Adelaide got in front of us at Bombardier with their order for EMU's . So we have to wait.  Pity when it was all so avoidable , but thats politics.

    Regarding Vlocity's they are being built side by side with Adelaide EMU's but were delayed waiting for bogies and motors from overseas.

    An extra early morning service (around 0520 to form 0630 existing service X Seymour) is being proposed but will wait until April 2015 now due to lack of time to organize.

    That makes a lot of sense.  

    How firm is this?

    Would there be an equivalent afternoon or late evening down too I presume?

    Seems it is still happening but no extra afternoon service probably because of the up Toc with no crossing loops.

    OK, that's something to look forward to.  

    But how would the set get to Shepp to form the early up?  Would it
    1 - run out empty at sparrows from Seymour or
    2 - run a late down service the previous evening or
    3 - run as a double consist on the evening down then split at the terminus?

    New 0515 service X Shepparton has been planned for 13/10/14 formed off the previous nights service with the 0630 service formed by an 0400 empty car movement from Seymour. Very surprised no announcement yet from Liberals.

    Why not have an evening Shepparton departure ex-Melbourne say around 2100 and extend the current 1740 H set service to Shepparton and convert the existing Shepparton time slot into a Seymour local? The 3 hour gap would allow enough time for the up freight to go through and would mean no dead running from Seymour in the early morning.

    So easy to run an extra Shepp return service each day.  Down just extend 1630 Dn Seymour through to Shepp.  On Up originate an early morning Seymour commuter  d/c H set ex Shepp. 65 minutes earlier than Seymour time, and drop existing loco hauled N set to depart from Shepp later in the am. This service can be run with existing rollingstock resources, and without requiring any infrastructure improvements between Seymour and Shepp.

    Issues with this plan.
    1. Vlocitys and Sprinters not ticked off for Shepparton so it has to be a pass.
    2. Up Tocumwal Freight has to be crossed between Seymour and Shepp.
    3. Earlier pass needs to be shunted to yard.
    4. No lighting and pathways in place for stabling in yard.
    5. Later arrival would need to be started and moved to yard in the morning for other set to dock.
    I believe in the future, facility's will be in place at Shepp for Vlocitys once all crossings are fixed and the line improved.
    So we will take any extra services we get as some progress.

    No buffet is scheduled to operate on the new early AM service. Sensible decision seeing as the journey is only about 2 and a half hours.

    Any announcement yet on testing of the new Deer Park-West Werribee diversion?  Looks to be pretty much complete from the latest photos I've seen.

    No doubt the opening announcement will be politically-timed.

    I received a flyer in the mail yesterday that testing of the RRL commences on Monday the 29th September.

    Vlocity units do not have on train catering.  Shepparton would require this as it is a much longer journey almost as long as the Warrnambool services.

    Why is shunting a train into a yard at Shepparton a problem?  Isn't this all part of running a railway?

    Vlocity units do not have on train catering. Shepparton would require this as it is a much longer journey almost as long as the Warrnambool services.

    Services to Shepp take approx 2 1/2 hours which is not much longer than Traralgon and when the track speed is increased  on the Shepp line it will be about the same so a buffet will not be required.
    Shunting trains at Shepp on the down end would require going over the crossing while the up end wouldn't.
    But there is no pathways or lighting in the sidings and this would have to be completed to store trains.
