RRL Opening Timetable - April 2015

Well it's fallen a long way short of 36 degC in Bendigo today (max so far of 31.9c) and yet WOLO is going to be enforced until 8pm this evening.  Ridiculous if you ask me, and just another reason why so many people are fed up with Vline!
Carnot

Agreed Exclamation

...and the Ballarat line was even worse, as Ballarat is naturally cooler than Bendigo. As soon as I received the text message from V/Line advising of WOLO's or 'heat speed restrictions' on the Ballarat line and the temperature in Ballarat at that time being 29C and the forecast, 33C.

I called V/Line and submitted a complaint regards this stupid decision and before I left work for the day I decided to also call my local MP's office to make an official complaint to Minister Allan.

As mentioned above, sometimes I think V/Line make these ridiculous decisions simply to inconvenience their bread and butter...the hapless passenger. I look forward to the reply from the Minister...as if the Summer isn't going to be long enough as it is. Embarassed

Last night I travelled on the 17:53 down Wendouree and the heat speed restrictions were lifted at about 18:15, as the driver cranked up the pace and drove normal speed after that time.

Moreover I'm reliably informed there are no WOLO's on the NE Albury line at any time, regardless of the temperature because it's all concrete sleepers, well guess what...so have Geelong and Ballarat lines Exclamation

Mike.

I'm sure that's because the Albury services run on ARTC track, and V/Line are the ones making these silly decisions.

Oh I agree. Ballarat is  is a very cool place. It's just teeming with hipsters. Cool

But Castlemaine has by far the higher hipster/total population ratio...

As a Bendigonian, I continue to be an amused spectator to the ongoing clashes between local hipsters and bogans Shocked  And many bogans actually enjoy a good coffee at the local hipster haunts, much to the proprietors dismay.

Anyway, getting back on topic - Congestion on the Sunshine - Footscray section of the RRL during peak times in an ongoing reality.

On Class 1 and   Class  1 1/2 track a speed reduction from 160kmh to 90 kmh is ridiculous on full concrete sleepers and 60 kg rail .  So VLP should not be imposing such harsh WOLOS within the Inter Urban area .  On Class 2 track beyond Interurban area on 94lb CWR rail a reduction from 115 to  90kmh for loco hauled seems prudent, but is a reduction from 130kmh to 90kmh really necessary for  DMU  ? with a lighter axle load .  The whole issue of WOLO SR needs review by OUTSIDE  engineering  consultants,  NOT by  Nanny State  mentality VLP . The 90kmh SR on WOLO days pre dates RFR and needs total  re asessment in a cool calm manner .

What is concerning about WOLOs is the way VLP treats it pax, like  1537  Dn Melton AMEX and pax directed to 1602 Dn Wendouree which is still only 3 car VL and running at 100% capacity, before it cops the extras off a cancelled train .  No bus back up, just treat the pax like sheep  .  Does this with  Geelong peak trips too , cancels a 444 seat train and directs pax to next train which is already at capacity  . Not a good way to treat daily commuters , far too many of which have to stand through failure of successive Governments to provide adequate peak capacity .

How difficult is it to order and have in place adequate rollingstock to lengthen existing peak period trains  ?  Not more train services, just longer trains, like 7 and 8 car VL sets at peak times. The long suffering public deserves better from Government, PTV and VLP . Its NOT rocket science .

PS:  ARTC do impose  Wolo  SR too and have been on XPT running very late at 90kmh all the way from Yass Junction to  Southern Cross .

Watch this space regards WOLO's on the NE as at this time, apparently there have been none so far this Summer.

Indeed, Castlemaine is the Rural/Urban interface of the Hipster Apocalypse!

And yes, Sunshine - Footscray is a mess but the mess continues right into SC. This morning's 8.06 Up from Castlemaine wasted a heap of time waiting to cross onto the flyover. 3 Velo sets passed us heading Dn while we sat there, they can't have all come from 15/16 so I don't know what was going on. It's still a ripper though that service although there was one Sulphur Crested Cocky and 2 sheep that would have begged to differ this morning had they lived to tell the tale!

I've found that service has a pretty good run most of the way because morning peak has passed on the Sunbury - Sunshine leg.

Incidentally a couple of weeks ago our morning Up train got stuck at Albion for a while due to a signalling/points problem into the RRL.  We ended up going down the Spark tracks until South Kensington where we traversed across to the RRL.  Something different.

Sounds like the cocky and 2 sheep had their own apocalyptic encounter...  Much evidence of that interface left on the front of the V/lo?

Yes Carnot, I had a look at the front of the Velo when we reached SC and it wasn't pretty. One of the poor blighters had bounced off the RHF corner but the other had been force fed (we were between Kyneton and Woodend and moving) through the hole in the "cow catcher" where the coupler protrudes. I was in the front car and heard the ballast hitting the undercarriage as we dragged it along for a bit. Untidy with blood, guts and wool all over the shop.

BTW the Cocky was hanging off the driver's mirror on arrival to Castlemaine and the driver got out and removed it with gloved hand. It was all too much for a few of Castlemaine's less battle hardened pax! Driver said it was rare to hit one.
