Those large road projects in Melbourne look like being very hard to sell to the voting public with the climate change things happening.

"Clearly the environment study was botched...."  oh come on @Carnot.

Why would you think that they have built a massive treatment plant on site for contaminated soil.?

The study WAS done and corrective action planned. It's  all about how well(not) the contractor did their sums.

The current nonsense is all about money, money, money. And the Vic taxpayer is not going to pay it.

cheers
John

Apparently it's the PFAS contamination and who pays to treat it which is the main sticking point.  The EPA introduced stricter rules on PFAS last October:

Seeing that the serial rent-seeker Transurban is awash with cash but doesn't want to pay for cleaning it up, the Govt should take them to court and ban them from any future toll road projects.

Brown stuff hitting the fan now with John Holland & CPB wanting to "Walk away" from the contract to build it.
http://www.3aw.com.au/west-gate-tunnel-in-doubt-as-builder-threatens-to-terminate-contract/

The West Gate Tunnel project is in doubt after the consortium contracted to build the $6.7 billion project has revealed it wants to walk away.
Transurban has told the stock exchange that builders John Holland and CPB have advised that due to contaminated soil on the project site, they intend to abandon the project.
But Transurban says it believes the project will still go ahead and the joint venture builders do not have grounds to terminate the contract.

Jacinta says:

I have to laugh.  No contractor would want to go anywhere near this disaster.

This really is turning into a smeg FEST for the government and at a time when mega road projects are on the nose and climate change action is demanded.

Interestingly the CPB company who has pulled out have also pulled out of the NEL.

It gets worse.

RTBU won't use the Wyndham Vale rail yard if the Govt allows the dumping of toxic waste right next to it.  I'm with the RTBU on this one 100%.

Cancel the project now.  That is all.

Looking like a really disaster now ore pressure being placed

https://www.railpage.com.au/news/s/v-line-services-threatened-as-rail-workers-refuse-to-work-on-toxic-soil-dump-site

Now we have no location in the state to dump this waste as every community will protest.  The project needs to be cancelled but shame the large amount of damage at the city end to valuable rail yards has already happened.

What did Transurban pay for the land at the rail yard as it has been turned over to them?

It's gone to the next level:

Just when you thought the problem was solved.  let's start dumping toxic waste and not tell anyone where it is going

If this soil was dumped in 2018 no one would have cared, because the EPA would have said it was fine then.
  Carnot Minister for Railways

Well, well, well, the EPA reverses all previous approvals:

The project should be ditched...

Latest reports from Jacinta states the tunnelling has cease in any case until the problem is solved.  This is really now looking like a disaster for the Transurban Company and not so for the good people of the Marsh.

This is what you get when you lie about the issues at the time of the projects announcement.
