I have read on here initially the empty will run from Seymour in the morning and then return as a revenue service from Shepparton to Melbourne.  This is only until Shepparton yard gets some upgraded lighting and security stabling I believe.

This I the situation as reported in the other thread.

The yard at shepparton is being upgraded with lighting and paths for crew to walk.

Once this is complete I think it is two sets which will be parked overnight.

When stabling yards are upgrade in Shepparton, will there be 4 services each way on weekdays?

1. The first Up is currently far too early it needs to be at 0550 forming 0650 ish Up Seymour, with the second am Up being put back to 0730 ish . Patronage of first am Up is very poor as it is far too early .

2. Yes, when the stabling is finished for two trains overnight at Shepparton then there will be an additional PM Down like the 1630 Dn Seymour extended through to Seymour . (At the moment cars for first Up go out early am as Ety Cars ex Seymour.)

3. Sadly VLP are doing the current tie renewal with wooden sleepers instead of low profile concrete sleepers. On other mainlines the recent tie renewals have mixed low profile concrete with wooden sleepers, so crazy still using 100 % wood when the line is badly in need of upgrade to Class - 2 to allow 130kmh DMU operation .  Ideally also needs relay with reclaimed 94lb rail ex RFR upgrades between Mangalore and  Murchison East as rail is very old in that section restricting speeds.

4. Existing infrastructure between Seymour and  Shepparton can support up to 5 return trips per Weekday. Above 5 return trips then one needs to recommission existing crossing loop at Murchison East, plus remote control of that loop plus remote control of the junction at Toolamba .

In the short term I would expect so, probably a mid to late afternoon departure from Melbourne (maybe about 1630, possibly as an extension of the current Seymour service at that time). This could go with the current evening service (1822 out of Melbourne) being pushed back an hour or so to spread the coverage a bit more evenly.

In the long term, the plan is to upgrade the line so DMU's could travel at a decent speed, this would then lay the seeds for services to bump out to about 5 or 6 each way each day.

I understand, but even timber sleepers with at least 47 kg rail would be a step forward. So line speeds go to 115kph loco hauled instead of 100kph. But yes, they should just re sleeper the entire line with concrete and put new 50kg rail onto it. Then upgrade the level crossings. So DMU's can do 130kph non stop.

Apart from Murchison East not being available, the other limiting factor is the safeworking system being train orders. The government would need to spend major dollars on upgrading the section to remote controlled ATC (Automatic Train Control)

Of course any low profile concrete sleepers would be gauge convertible wouldn't they!!
Lets keep in mind the big picture people. This is the Tocumwal line. It just so happens that passenger trains unfortunately don't go past Shepparton.
Graincorp have just announced they will spend considerable dollars at Tocumwal to construct a loop that will accommodate 50 wagon trains that will be able to load without shunting. They will do so using timber sleepers that can obviously be gauge converted in the future.
There is also still a huge push by Riverina councils to re open the Tocumwal Narrandera line. Most produce south of the Murrumbidgee river goes south to Victoria either by road or by the long way around to the North East line by rail. The Narrandera line is the missing link and many Riverina roads are beyond councils budgets to maintain.
Of course this will take a brilliant business case to re open this line and its a long shot. But lets not be so short sighted as to use non convertible concrete sleepers on the relatively short Shepparton section of the line and rule out future standardisation.
Would we be talking about the Murray Basin rail project if during the last upgrade Mr Brumby used non convertable concrete sleepers as many people on this forums wanted him too??

Reopening Tocumwal to narrandera would be doable with a business case.

If the roads cannot be maintained now which is typical of most councils who have been left paying for massive truck damage.

Another council with major issues is on the line to balranald.

We are talking about the southern food bowl.

If you recall el Zorro had a daily Tocumwal Melbourne service also. PN on the down and El Zorro on the up in the same day.

The traffic is certainly there. PN are so lethargic that overflow has now gone to road.

el Zorro went bust in 2012???.

So since they went down has PN been doing the up?

No one can run definitely 5 possibly 6 return trips on Weekdays on the existing infrastructure with  Train Orders . One does NOT need ATC for such a low volume of traffic, especially with no crosses between Seymour and Shepparton .  The junction at Toolamba can become driver operated as recently done at Dunolly .

Whilst there is no need for crossing loops between Seymour and Shepparton at present, if there is a steady increase in service to the suggested 5 or 6 a day, a crossing facility at Murchison East would be required.

While 5 passenger services a day between Seymour and Shepparton might have no need to cross, there needs to be sufficient pathways for goods traffic. Currently PN Tocumwal freight, 3 days a week in each direction, add to that, QUBE's Deniliquin Rice train, 5 days a week in the Down direction, possibly also in the up direction in the future. Then there are grain trains when required. That along with an increase in Pass services to the suggested 5 a day (in the medium to long term) will probably make this the busiest of the non interurban BG lines.

If this is the case the need to upgrade the level crossings to a minimum of: bells, lights and rumble strips, becomes more urgent. Same with the overall track quality, such as re sleepering with concrete and better rail etc..

The freight trains will need it anyway.Once it is done you can then run V Locities as well. So two hours from SCS to Shepparton.
