Gday all again
On a cold night in the Melbourne CBD in 2013, Steamrail Victoria's R761 and 707ops' R707 break the silence as they cross the Flinders St viaduct on return from Traralgon with the annual Snow Train. Enjoy!

Who was that such and such driver who couldn't leave the whistle alone? A bit of the whistle is great, but the beat of the engine is worth hearing too.

Agreed, but I guess the opportunity proved irresistible to tell the CBD they were there. After all, it's not everyday that Double Rs get to parade through the city. Smile

Excessive, immature, unprofessional - it would only take one complaint from a do-gooder or whatever who said that they or their cat were traumatised by the noise and all hell would break loose. It is the sort of trivial issue that no end of authorities would jump on to the nth degree to the detriment of the multitude of important things that they should be doing.

It is this sort of thing that brings the gunzel movement into disrepute.

The echo off the buildings is just awsome , it made general public outside the casino stop and look , simolar things have happened and will happen again and not just with hertitage trains
Search youtube there is one with a K class aswell over the viaduct
Good on the crew for having a bit of fun and putting on a show for everyone not just railfans

Has it occurred to you that there might well be a large number of people who regard that excessive whistling  as nothing other than noise pollution?
You're looking at it from the somewhat insular position of a rail fan. I love the steam whistle properly used, but you need to remember that we are very much a minority group. In my opinion, that whistling is just plain selfishness. We don't need excessive noise, just as we don't need excessive smoke; there are people only too ready to complain, and the nanny state takes notice.

The sound of the whistle echoing off the city buildings is magnificent, but I'll bet 90% of the people who heard it without seeing the train had no idea what it was.

Some probably thought it was an air raid siren! Shocked

Why debate something that happened 3 years ago? It happened, as Greg's video has captured.

Yep ok, surely there's better things to focus on. It's 2016 now.

We learnt from it, back in 2014 when the trip ran again with less of a fanfare.

I was beginning to think the driver was in need of surgery to get his and of it.........And the whistle too !

Actually, I think that driver may've been rather excessive with the whistle at a number of points along the line during that trip. For I a recall hearing from my home a similar duration blasting, as a steam train obviously went past Huntingdale & Oakleigh.

Has anyone considered that both locos "serenading" and that just perhaps it was the last steam trip for at least one driver.................

So what? It would still classify as excessive noise to a lot of people. We need to stop being selfish.

Trains are not playthings despite that many on here would like to think so.

It is only going to need one írregularity' of any sort to bring the whole show down.

After Snow Train 1 the other week, Steamrail actually received complaints (in writing) from various persons complaining there wasn't enough whistling over the viaduct.

It goes to show that no matter what you do, you cannot please everyone.

Yep- as the old saw puts it, "No matter what you do, you're wrong."

However, I'd err on the side of caution and keep the use of the whistle down.
Tell the writers that if they want more whistle, train tickets are available from Steamrail.

No sorry they weren't. Various families out and about beside the line who took their children to see the train and it didn't "whistle" for them.
