Elec Fleet early units going to retire?

Was on 10 this morning but got failed at Roma St with door faults.
There are other doors on 20 not shut too, guess a bit hasty turning her off.

HI all,

Sorry to be a bother here! But I am rather curious. What is happening with the older, first EMUs pulled from service now? Are they temporarily forgotten in some yard somewhere?

I live about a 5 minutes' drive away from Elimbah yard, so I do check occasionally. It's been chock full of EMUs for some time, and an ICE set. I think there is one, maybe two roads free on the sides of the yard, because occasionally a random NGR shows up and sleeps over for a couple of days, which is weird to me because I didn't think the NGRs were cleared to run on the Caboolture line, so what's it doing there?

What is the future of these retired EMUs? They can't stay in the Elimbah graveyard forever, so what's the next step? When will they finally face the guillotine, and where? Have any already been chopped up, or are in line to be? Finally, when will the other two ICEs be retired? I would really like one final ride on them soon - they are by far and away, my favourite train. I shook my head when I saw the one unit there in Elimbah, but I guess it has to happen some day.

Sorry for all the questions! Again, I'm curious!

Cheers,
Rory

Hi Rory, I’m led to believe there is a scrapping tender (issued 2015) for someone to scrap these emu sets when they come out of service but as yet nothing has happened which leads me to believe they are just stored in case the NGR units fail. With more of these NGRs in service I doubt the emu sets won’t return to service any time soon.
There are also stored sets at Banyo and Mayne sidings at Bowen Hills. I’m surprised there isn’t any at Kippa-Ring as this Yard is always empty except at night.
I guess the waiting game on scrapings will have to wait a while longer.
Cheers.

Currently on set 79 on Kippa-Ring-Springfield service with 01 leading.
Would be great to see 01 restored to original livery!!!

Saw 61 & 51 doing a special up north past Strath at about 16:00 yesterday. Good to see they’re still going!
Anyone know why some sets (69 & 79 I’ve seen have this) have car numbers 169, 269, and then 469 instead of 369? Only a few of them have this.
We’re the cars replaced or something? Because if they were, that means I caught an unoriginal 69 yesterday!

And for some reason this morning I caught the 79 and it was with 22 (Cannon Hill)! Unless I saw the numbers wrong, isn’t 79 usually with 01?

01 was defo with 79 on Redcliffe turns yesterday.
Seen 11, 12, 61, 73 and 75 today.

20 & 72 have moved out of Mayne Sidings and made way for 67 & 1 unidentifiable set.

Ok 79 was back with 01 today. Phew.
Saw 69 and 36 being buddies on the Cleveland and also saw 84, 73, 78, and 82. I swear they are using more of the older EMU stock to do Nambour and Caboolture runs when usually the newer S/IMU’s do those.

04 & 42 at Kippa Ring
67 must be still at Banyo as 87 and 1 UID stored in Mayne Sidings.

Saw 85 and 50 doing a Redcliffe at Bald Hills. 28 was leading 60 on a line I didn’t catch. I think 60 needs a little bit of makeup because she’s looking a little sad.

Set 01 is now paired with 33.

Saw 79 with 21 this morning (which makes sense because 01 is with 33). 26 and 10 seem to be doing the Cleveland-Shorncliffe line, and 34 and 86 were together heading towards Roma Street earlier this morning.

Seen 72 running today with 36 I think. This was in Mayne Sidings for 2 weeks or more so now back in service.
Be interesting if 20 is also back in service.

A very battered 60 (with handles) is on caboolture runs this morning.

20 is now back out in service working with 69.

The "4" series cars indicates there's no driving cab - unlike the "3" series cars, which do have driving cabs.

Thank you @Sulla1 for that info! Makes sense now.
Saw 33 and 01 yesterday evening on the Caboolture line and 44 and 83 this morning. Glad to hear 20 and 72 are back in service!
I’m going to try a little harder to find out the unidentified car that 87 is with in Mayne.

Still can’t see the UID in Mayne.
Caught 58 and 61 on the Redcliffe line. 61 is one of the other 3-car early EMUs still with the logo on the car without the driving cab (that usually says Queensland Rail - it has the logo instead) so I’m glad it’s showing its history! The train needs a little wash though.
Saw 69 with 78 doing Springfield line, 44 with 83 on Springfield and 34 with 86 on the Shorncliffe.

I really wish the EMU60s sets would be taken care of and loved... they’re all run down and dirty! Queensland Rail should be taking care of its almost retired senior citizens. Cool

04 & 42 doing Ferny Grove line seen at Central
82 is battered as hell and has several doors apart (in Mayne)
76 & 53 Shorncliffe seen at South Brisbane

82 & 45 on Bowen Hills depot with pantographs down.
58 and 1 UID unit in Mayne Sidings.
75 & 30 on Ferny Grove’s this morning.

69 & 78 together at Roma Street
