I read in Fairfax today that the preformed concrete slabs for the new Transurban tunnel are being made in Benalla and then to be railed to Melbourne. They have built a 700m siding in Benalla apparently.

Anyone have more details?

This is what has been discussed and as you say the output will be railed to Melbourne but not sure into which yard.  Any idea where the siding would have been constructed?  Into the plant?

When this starts or if it has actually started?

Thread from first announcement for reference. @dthead wondered if it might be in the old Benalla yard. @YM-Mundrabilla wondered how the tunnel segments could be in gauge. @Dangersdan007 wondered if it might be broad gauge.

But no one had answers to any of these, except the last one!

My money would be on the loading heading into MFT. The trains haven't started running yet.

Looks like PN has the business in that case?

A reasonable conclusion, but it does strike me as the sort of business SSR would be having a serious crack at. PN are not exactly known for their flexibility and having to fit unconventional loading requirements might be beyond them.

I have heard that V/Line have works scheduled for next Thursday and Friday and will have No.3 & No. 4 Roads occupied.

PN are known for moving stuff around that they can make a large amount of money from though and it's not exactly rocket science moving lumps of concrete around.

Wouldn't they want a rail spur at Spotswood Into the tunnel entrance works area ?

Asked around today and word is the concrete will be unloaded in the old steel terminal which is reasonably close to one of the portals.

The tunnel boring machines usually get their pre-cast segments delivered by a portable light railway, It would make seance to have this light railway connected to the SG train unloading/storage area.

I was in Benalla this morning and went for a look see. No sign of any recent work. Nothing stockpiled, no survey pegs, just the 3 tracks.

Trawling through Information from the local Benalla Council, the proposed Pre-Cast concrete manufacturing facility will most likely be located at 270 Murray Road (between Benalla and Winton)

Yes that's my understanding, I'm guessing the 700 odd metre siding will be built there.

Assuming the Yarrawonga Road end of Murray Road, I do recall seeing Earthmoving equipment there, immediately west of the now disused Mokoan Diversion channel.

Why on earth would you say that based on the previous 4 posts in this thread?
