Great news for all concerned.

Some of what you read on here makes you wonder if there is any future in rail at all. Clearly there is.

How was the delivery made was this a southbound cement dropping wagons off ?

Isn't the plan to deliver the precast concrete segments (manufactured In Benalla) to a lay down yard at the old Melbourne Steel Terminal (E Gate, opposite Costco)

If there has it would have to be by road as the siding at Benalla hasn't been connected to the main line yet.

There's a massive amount of work starting in September and I've heard connecting the concrete plant will be part of it.

The tunnel boring at West Gate hasn't started yet.

Has anything happened with regards to this yet?

Vicsig have a photo of a lone light engine movement (CM class) heading for Benalla supposedly for cement traffic. Is this any relation to this siding?

well they are currently trucking the panels that this traffic was going to be providing, so guess not at this stage.

The siding was connected during the three day shutdown two weeks ago. It didn't look like there'd been any rail traffic in there yet when I went past last Thursday morning (12th).

I cant imagine there will be much traffic out until the wagons to haul the tunnel pieces get here.... let alone for the tunnel boring machines to start digging.

The timeline on the West Gate Tunnel Project's website indicates tunnelling will commence in late 2019.

Have any test train loads of concrete tunnel segments taken place ?

This morning on 3AW's rumor file, there was a story that all the concrete segment loading from Benalla will be trucked along the Hume, because 90% of the load was damaged while In transit on the train !

Remember this just someone's story, there were plenty of stories on the rumor file about how freight trains would be banned on the Dandenong line viaducts.
  hbedriver Chief Train Controller

Lots of rumours get around about all this. At work we were told that the loading was over 100mm too wide / out of gauge. Of course, most rumours disappear, or are otherwise proven untrue. It is probably more reasonable at this stage to ask whether any of the panel loading which the siding was built for have actually been shipped yet by rail? For that matter, has any cement loading gone into the new siding yet?

It would seem amazing that they built a siding, with all the complications with the signalling (that alone would be a 7-figure sum), and which was commissioned a few weeks back, without any loading yet. Almost as astonishing that a modern railway track manager would replace all sleepers on a main line in this day and age and in doing so totally mess up the tracks...

We would then expect trains to be running at this point.

Does not explain why the cement is not inbound yet (unless it is due to manufacturing not yet started) as Qube are doing some great work on the BG with cement.

The Benalla plant is making pre-cast concrete panels.  If 90% were damaged during the test shipment by rail, then there's a very good prospect of these NEVER being sent by rail again from Benalla to Dynon.  Trucks all the way I'm afraid...

Red faces and clogged roads all around.  Just another monumental stuff-up involving the Westgate tunnel project.

When did this supposed test run take place if in fact it actually did?  Would think a lot specialized wagons fitted with some form cradles would also be needed for the amount of curved sections that will be required for this project.  Media beat up more likely scenario .
