Sounds to me like another non event?
Why on earth would you say that based on the previous 4 posts in this thread?

I mean, its not like I was doing Full track protection there 2 months ago for a Tamper and Reg, noticing the field being worked on, and also found out via the motel that the ARTC rep for the project was staying there one of the nights I was there....

I had another look at the site today. Diagonally opposite the D&R Henderson timber mill.

What looks like heavy Earthworks in progress, looking south from the Murray Road site entrance, about 200m West of Yarrawonga Road. Large Crane already on site.

Looking West from the Yarrawonga Road level Crossing, the site is beyond the trees, north side of the line, about 2-3km East of the Witt Street Crossover.

That particular location works because it has all the services the will be needed, power and water and natural gas, in part because of the two large industries nearby, Hendersons [particleboard], as already mentioned, and Thales [munitions/explosives]. As can be seen by the photos, it's flat to ever so gently rising land that is easy to develop. It's the type of development that could be in business for many years to come after this contract is completed. Primarily because of them being on SG and located on what is to soon to become the Inland Rail route. Potentially, the three industries will have access to markets all up the East Coast.

IDK, there is surely uranium pretty close to the Adelaide-Darwin line now....

Though not quite "Nukes", the stuff they make [Thales] has got to be made somewhere, and just out of Benalla is where it's done! As well as munitions for the forces & police, and also for recreation shooters and probably undesirables as well, its where the explosives for the mining and construction industries are produced in Australia.

Do we know hoe the siding with be structured off the West Line?

Via the Lead to the Oaklands line or elsewhere?
  potatoinmymouth Chief Commissioner

Given the Oaklands line is not affected by the TAA, it seems pretty clear the turnout installation will take place on the West Line itself.

The Occupation starts (the other end is at Wangaratta) at Signal BNL34 (197.357km), which is about 300m on the Albury side of the Crossover at Witt Street. So, about 2-3km beyond the Oaklands Line junction.

The turnout would be between there and Yarrawonga Road (200.576km) I suspect.

Train working when Operational will be interesting if it is a single dead end siding only.

Had a look today, these photos are taken from the south looking at the construction site.
Couldn't see any obvious prep for rail access at this stage.
Spoke to a few locals about it who are happy its generating a reported 500 jobs for the area.

In the first photo, the distance between the first line of trees in the foreground and the road in the distance is 900m.
I assume the 700m siding will be in that stretch.

Also potentially related was the AK Track Testing Train in Benalla.

Went past the site today and construction if the siding has started. Looks like there'll be 2 roads so locos can run around the train.

Government press release about the siding. I don't think there's anything new in it, except perhaps the anticipated late 2018 commissioning.

Lots of work going on at the site when I went past this morning. Some sleepers are in place for the siding but no sign of the points from the mainline.
  woodford Chief Commissioner

Went past yesterday afternoon, the frames for two VERY large shed have been erected. lots of earth works going on including a very large storage and loading area near the fence, The base work for the connection to the main line has been, and I believe there is at least one signal in place (not easy to see such close items at 110kph), the sleepers for the points have been laid out, ready for the points to be constructed.

One does not have time for a real good look with the train doing 110kph, one is only close to the site for under a minute.

There was an Occupation scheduled 4 weeks ago (see earlier in this thread) to install those points. Looks like something wasn't ready and they missed the window.

Yes, I was surprised to see the turnouts had not yet been constructed. Note: it COULD be a second turnout, I did look along the track and did not see a turnout stub coming from the east line. As stated the speed of the train makes detailed observations quite difficult.

I do not THINK the  turnout rail kit was there, the original turnout kits used on the SG conversion came from Europe, Germany I believe (the pack has a metal label tied to it, giving its id and origin) and it appears to take ages to get these.

Note: There is relatively current (25th August) image of the area on Google Earth.

A comment, I believe the siding is to be 700 metres long, now I wonder if they chose that length as that is the free standing length availible in the loop at Benalla. So any shunting required can be done in Benalla. The concrete plants turn out being aprox 3400 metres from Benalla

We slowed down to have a sticky beak so had a pretty good look at 40 km/hr or so. Wink

There are sleepers in place for the points in the siding but there's no sign of any hardware for the main line points. The only sign of work for the mainline points is the formation. There are no signals in place. There's about 2 km of temporary orange fencing along the east side of the line opposite the site. I'm not sure what's going on there.

Is the siding planned for accesss to the main at both ends or is it a lead off the yard ?

Just thinking operationally how will this work ?
