Big Boy No. 4014
UP inspected other locos and determinded 4014 to be in the most suitable condition for reactivation. The museum was prepared to exchange it for some replacement items.
When it was moved they cut the piston rods. There was a plan in the late 1990's to reactivate 4018 for a movie; prior to the "vandalism" on the piston rods. When I visited 4014 it was regarded as the most complete. The staff told me that when they needed to move 4014, a gentle shove from tractor was all that was required.UP inspected other locos and determinded 4014 to be in the most suitable condition for reactivation. I was surprised myself as some of the other units were housed indoors with 4014 housed outdoors in Califiornia. 4005 I think is undercover 4006 and 4012 the same. 4018 may also be
4018 was moved by rail between museums in 2013 although not under steam that I can find.
Although 4014 was housed outside in Pomona it only rains for around less than 20 days per year (average max rainfall 17 inches) and the Rail Giants Museum regularly serviced the loco which is why UP picked it.When it was moved they cut the piston rods. Has there actually been any footage of it being steamed/tested yet? I've seen it mentioned that it has had a fire in it but haven't found anything...UP have put a brief video on Facebook dated 13 April showing it in steam.

When I made that link the FB page was accessible to all and contained a video of 4014 in regular steam service, including some shots of its driving controls. The page has changed since then, becoming accessible only to FB members and, so far as I can tell, omitting the video.Or, if you're not an FB member, - https://www.facebook.com/Union-Pacific-Big-Boy-Locomotive-104984082869998/Can't seem to see either of those and I have a facebook account.
Correct, they were cut on the move to the original museum. My apologies.4018's piston rods were cut in the early 1960's, not as part of its 2013 move. When it was moved they cut the piston rods. The pity in some ways was that UP stored 4023 at Cheyanne, with 3985, for many years with perhaps a long term view towards overhaul in some far distant (from 1962's perspective) time. It ended up in 'that' park, almost irrecoverable.
