The hay will be packed in silage cubes to feed beef cattle overseas apparently.  Qube hauling cubes. Literally.

Thanks for the update.  Nothing run via Gheringhap with Hay this week.  When did you say they commenced?

Preumably this is where (why) the last $23 million of the SG is being spent?

I believe there are still signalling issues on the geelong Ballarat line at North Geelong.

Plot thickens slightly - the train had gensets and a few 20ft reefers loaded. So hay is clearly not the only loaded, unless of course Japanese cattle demand their veggies from the crisper drawer.

Yeah, it looks like a mini-intermodal setup.  I hope it's a success.

Also of note is Pickering Transport is a company from Mildura who I have not yet seen using rail so this is most interesting.

This is a positive move.

Does anybody know what days it is running and at what times?

The plan is to run this service twice a week or more.

Although the Manangatang line will be shut for two weeks for urgent remedial work to be done asap (ie. Spend some of the $23 million as mentioned above).

Interesting news, that this business has cropped up, be great to find out some back ground info. Wonder if they considered tagging onto the loading out of Mananag or just concentrated on acquiring their own service ?

The old hay train service from Boort, that ceased about 10 years ago, did they just not find it economical to keep running or shifted to supply local people only or just changed the production into some other product. About 11 years ago I watched the train being loaded at Boort for about 3/4 hour, interesting viewing and a 40' container 40' swinging in the air, is rather unnerving to see.

However, good luck to them and also an array of different containers, can only hope this encourages others to jump on board. Also, must be a few Bucks involved, a new siding would not be cheap, any Govt assist there ?

So Ding-a-Ling Dans broad gauge still has a pulse......

Take a look at the https://www.railpage.com.au/f-p2148005.htm#2148005 thread it runs at least on a Thursday evening.

Also what now of the Boort loading which PN dumped?  Could it also come back?

That would be good if it could be done efficiently and quickly (so as not to delay the Ultima train too much).

Apparently Pickering's are using the Ultima train to transport general freight and salt which is normally sent by road.

I am becoming more excited as I believe this would be the first Mildura based forwarder other than Wakefields to start using rail although they are not using the Mildura terminal and this could be the interesting news.  Is the freight Qube is now varrying coming from the Ultima area?

I wonder why they are not loading at Mildura though - where exactly is this freight originating?  Or is it a volume question - combined with the hay loading this is viable but standalone wouldn't be viable ex-Mildura?   Or there is no loading point (yet) in Mildura to use?
