Even if there’s only a 10% chance the majority of specialists are correct about the looming climate catastrophe, it is still compellingly logical to be vigilant about the environment, don’t you think?"
NO.

That's like saying "let's spend more than our annual GDP on insuring against bear attack" when there's no bears in Australia.

I wonder, in the early to mid 1930s how many of the field’s scientists would have signed papers endorsing cane toads...

you didnt answer his question, instead you posed another one with zero chance of happening. Are you really that sure there is no chance climate change is real? Given the consequences of being wrong....

We are in an interglacial period transiting from a large ice age recorded in the history of ancient peoples such as the Aboriginal Australians and supposedly the planet is still warming up from that era. They blame this warming for the rising oceans and also the disappearance of the woolly mammoth from Sibera about 10,000 years ago. Were these events connected to anthropomorphic climate change? Clearly not.

We are much more likely to have a near-mass extinction of humanity type event from other completely unavoidable events such as:
  • Asteroid
  • Another "Little Ice Age" peaking around 1600, caused by cycles of the sun and thought to be currently in flux
  • Sudden global cooling because of a large explosive volcano (Tambora, Krakatoa).
The planet has experience much larger concentrations of carbon dioxide than we're forecast to top out at - and life survived. Why do people presume that it acts like a poison and will extinguish all life?

Yawn, this thread has become a Climate deniers Circle-jerk. I can't be bothered to reply to any of these bogus statements.

Anyhow for the argument that 'more carbon is good for trees'

Don't go DD707.
More fun to be had here. When asteroids and the like are raised, like jostling for a lifeboat position on the Titanic.
People have their views and unlikely to change. Some study, somewhere, can likely defend ANY position.
No confusion on my part about that.

Because you have nothing.

We'll get to the end of this century and we'll still be waiting for the oceans to boil and sky to turn red. Just get on with your life and ignore the climate change hysteria - it ain't real.

We had instant annihilation by nuclear war (that's still a real threat by the way)...
The hole in ozone layer...
This is just the latest incarnation of the doomsday cult determined to make money from people's ignorance and fear.
How much money has Al Gore made since he went around promoting his ice-free Arctic by 2020? Tim Flannery? These people are making money out of putting fear into average people. And unfortunately the gullible everywhere have fallen for it.

The hole in the Ozone layer caused by CFCs etc was indisputable and at least world leaders got their act together with the Montreal Protocol in 1988.

Incidentally, it's well on the way to being healed.

Don, weren't CFC banned to deal with ozone issue?
Nuclear war, ever heard of MAD? (Mutually assured destruction)
I've posted before Tim Flannery over egged the pudding.
IIRC! Tony Abbott, open to correction, exactly who, made statements about Greenland becoming useful as farming land again due to climate change. Talk about hedging your bets, as a denier.
As for what happens at the end of this century, possibly no one reading this be alive, and if they are, the grey matter will have deteriorated such that they can't wipe their own smeg.
Fact is we all will kick the bucket, but really is there a requirement to fast track it by wrecking the joint?

Have a nice day.

We are NOT wreaking the joint. If people really believe that then stop consuming, stop using electricity, petrol and every other modern product. Live in a yurt in the bush and don't consume anything at all. Would you do that to 'save the planet'?

People think that by installing a few solar panels they can feel good 'saving the planet', in reality they're doing zip.

Nor am I a denier.

I have more credibility than the people who predicted the disappearance of low-lying Pacific nations by 2020; the Arctic being completely free of ice in summer (again by 2020).

Doesn't it make you the least bit suspicious that none of the doomsday predictions from 15-20 years ago are nowhere near correct?

This country has become quite mad in the last 24-48 hours, there are some deranged drongos out there let me tell you! from Barnaby Joyce's comments that the person that died in the fires probably was a Green's voter, so what, who care's Barnaby!!, then yesterday you had a Senator from WA, Senator Jordan Steele-John saying to the Coalition you are like arsonists! he was referring to the fact that more back-burning should be done, but Steele-John's own party don't allow it!!, then to top off the craziness, you had some people ringing in a radio show on 2GB last night suggesting that cigarette butts don't start fires, this despite my mum having to put out a small fire today because our dopey neighbour tossed one out!! madness....

I think you need some time in the Maldives my friend. You can see the affects there.

You can also go to America. The weather is as divided as the people. You have huge winter storms in the east, and even worse wildfires in the west.

Not one of the promises of the climate scarers has come true in 20 years.  How much longer do we have to put up with their threats of doom of climate armageddon before they give up on this and find something else to scare us with?
