It's Corona not corono (actually Coronavirus). You know, like the Toyota car. It means Crown in case you were wondering.

I merely point this out because as you are scared of it you may want to look it up on the interwebs at some stage and I would hate for you to miss out on some important piece of news due to a miss-spelling.

It may already be so, but it is not easy to tell. It depends on a number of factors such as the accuracy of the information coming out of China, changes in the Chinese health care system over the last twenty years and the application of lessons learned from SARS and MERS, both of which were also caused by novel coronaviruses. Ask again in six months or so...

I have a couple of friends living in China, they say this is quite overblown; it’s bad but the authorities are saying those that have died have so because they were elderly, ill, or otherwise immunocompromised.

Meanwhile, have no fear, Pope Francis is on the case praying for the dead, the sick and the families of the vicitims - all ‘scientifically’ known to be more beneficial than investing some of the Vatican’s spare gold in medical research...

If we ever had a zombie apocalypse, where coronavirus cases or something else got incrediblly out of hand that our health system could not cope, where would we send these infected patients?

The Chinese appear to be building a tent hospital in Wuhan to house the affected people. Where could we build one if it ever got to a point that infection rates were out of control?

I think it would have to he somewhere on the Nullabor. These people could be trucked out there by train, or by plane (Watson and other airfields) to be isolated and looked after until they came back to good health.

I think we should pick a site and build proper large scale hospital facilities. It could also serve other functions.

I have lived in Australia through quite a number of epidemics, beginning with polio in 1949 (well before there was a vaccine available). There have been various others at regular intervals since. I'm all in favour of hospitals, but a big one in an isolated area would be wasted in my opinion. Build near population - the logistics are all in favour.
In Melbourne, we had a specialised infectious diseases hospital in Fairfield for decades, and nothing got out.

There's also the precedent of the Spanish Flu quarantine facility at North Head (near Manly) in 1918-1920.

Some are saying that if the virus is not contained, it could have a similar toll.
  justapassenger Minister for Railways

Australian hospitals are well prepared for emergency scenarios including bio-war quarantine operations, they take part in multi-agency exercises on a regular basis.

Should a temporary quarantine facility be required, requisitioning the use of sporting stadiums (or a complex with multiple venues, like Melbourne Park) would be a better option than a concentration camp in the desert. They are closer to population centres where staff would be sourced from, they have security perimeters in place, and they have certain facilities like toilets and food preparation areas that could be used as part of the plan.

Now some may howl that sport is sacred, but I would suggest that any contagion situation in Australia would have seen professional sport and other large public gatherings like concerts cancelled long before it got bad enough to require temporary quarantine facilities. That is what has happened in China.

I don't think we need any more hospitals in Australia. We need to use the ones we have more efficiently by supporting them with better resourcing for primary healthcare and healthcare at home.

Australia already has numerous quarantine areas, likely thousands of them, and for something microbiological for example we probably have certainly in the tens, possibly a hundred sites already set up.

Years ago I toured both HIFAR and OPAL which must have made it late 06, or maybe earlier. There are several special areas within the Lucas Heights complex that are absolutely off limits to effectively everyone. I was travelling with the minister for science and defence and not even he was allowed in. The rooms are specialist microbiological containment areas and other associated quarantine facilities that exist for exactly a need like a large uncontained outbreak.

ANU has similar, (I was allowed in those and that without working for the government) as I am sure do many existing hospitals and universities.

There are theories that Bill Gates invented it to create panic and slow down the Trump 2nd victory juggernaut, or that vaccine companies that the Clintons have shares in have released it to bump up business and share prices, but I'm sceptical. The Chinese run a tight ship and I reckon they'll get a grippe on this.

One thing that's not a conspiracy theory is that Australia's tourism industry is stuffed after the summer bushfires and now Chronovirus threat.
